New handbook provides mental health information

A new NCAA membership handprovides information for effectively and quickly identifying student-athletes who are at risk for mental health problems or are experiencing emotional symptoms.

The publication, Managing Student-Athletes’ Mental Health Issues, was developed by Ron A. Thompson and Roberta Trattner Sherman of the Bloomington (Indiana) Center for Counseling and Human Development.

The handbook covers mood disorders (including discussion of depression and suicide intervention); anxiety disorders (panic attacks, stress, general anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder); eating disorders; and substance-related disorders.
It also addresses management and treatment issues, and lists Web-based or other resources.

The NCAA handbook does not attempt to address all mental health problems, but is designed to help coaches identify student-athletes who may be having difficulty and to assist in responding appropriately and effectively.

Sports committees

Ice hockey, golf, rowing and track panel actions reported

Various NCAA sports committees’ actions recently have been reported in the online edition of The NCAA News, including these actions (with online publication date):
The Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee will change the way it calculates the RPI, including eliminating the bonus system (July 10).

The Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Committee continues to believe that non-predetermined sites work best for the Division III championship (July 9).

The Division I Women’s Golf Committee announced it will move to a true at-large selection process and move away from a regional allocation model (July 3).

The Divisions I, II and III Rowing Committees agreed to take over the responsibility of securing hotel rooms for teams participating in the rowing championships (July 2).

The Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Committee will study the possibility of conducting its championship game at a site associated with the Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship (June 28).

Two committees also took rules actions in recent meetings (rules changes are subject to approval by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel):

The Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee decided not to pursue a pole vault rules change that would have allowed for a successful vault even if the pole were to displace the bar after it was disassociated with the competitor (July 3).

The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee determined its intention to use the two-referee, one-linesman officiating system for all levels of play starting in 2008-09 (July 2).

The committees’ full reports are accessible through the View All Association Updates link at www.ncaa.org.
