New sport-sponsorship  form available online

A new form incorporating membership suggestions for streamlining collection of sport sponsorship and other demographic information is now available.

A link to the online Sport Sponsorship and Demographic Form was sent via e-mail May 21 by NCAA Membership Database Manager Michelle Vaughn to directors of athletics and conference commissioners. The e-mail also included a user ID and password.

Once accessed, the online form will display only sports that an institution reported it sponsored last year, permitting the institution to confirm or edit the list of sports it will sponsor during the coming academic year.

The form also solicits information appropriate to the institution’s membership division, and requests gender and ethnicity data previously solicited separately by the NCAA research staff.

As in past years, the deadline for submitting the form is August 15.

Wrestling committee offers plan for at-large allocations

The Division I Wrestling Committee is recommending modifying the historical data portion of the formula used to select at-large individual allocations for the Division I Wrestling Championship to a three-year look back in determining how many wrestlers each qualifying tournament should send to the finals site.

The recommendation to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet is described in detail in The NCAA News’ May 18 online report of the wrestling committee’s recent meeting, accessible through the View All Association Updates link at www.NCAA.org.

Academic enhancement panel formed for sport

A newly formed Division I Men’s Basketball Academic Enhancement Group includes presidents and chancellors, head coaches, commissioners, directors of athletics, and faculty athletics representatives as members and is charged with developing strategies to enhance academic performance and graduation rates in Division I men’s basketball.

Dan Guerrero, director of athletics at the University of California, Los Angeles, will chair the group.

The group is expected to make recommendations to the Division I Board of Directors by the end of 2008.
