Board approves baseball proposals, bans messaging

The Division I Board of Directors approved a package at its April 26 meeting from the Baseball Academic Enhancement Working Group that includes a requirement for academic certification for student-athletes in the fall term to be eligible to participate in the spring.

The package also retains the financial aid model of 11.7 equivalencies, but limits counters to 27 and requires individual aid packages to include at least 33 percent athletics aid. The regular-season squad size is capped at 35.

The Board also adopted a proposal that bans coaches from sending text messages to prospective student-athletes, citing student-athlete support for the restriction.

Division II

Presidents back proposals addressing initial eligibility

The Division II Presidents Council plans to seek membership approval of early certification for initial eligibility based on a prospect’s six-semester core courses, grades and test score.

The Council also endorsed increasing the number of core courses required for initial eligibility to 16.

Division III

Council urges information about membership study

The Division III Presidents Council encouraged distribution of more information to Division III members about why the NCAA is conducting a study of the Association’s membership structure.

The presidents supported a plan to compile a question-and-answer document addressing reasons for the study.
