Peter Roby has been named director of athletics at Northeastern University after serving as director of the university’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society since 2002.

As head of the center, Roby has championed the role sports can play in bringing about positive social change through research, education and advocacy. He also has been outspoken against the use of performance-enhancing drugs and cautioned against the competitive pressures placed on children.
Roby, the former head basketball coach at Harvard, will become just the second black athletics director at a Division I institution in New England. During his coaching career, Roby served as an assistant at Stanford, Dartmouth and Army.

Before joining Northeastern, Roby was the vice president of U.S. marketing at Reebok. A 1979 graduate of Dartmouth, Roby was co-captain of the basketball team and earned a bachelor’s degree in government. He replaces Dave O’Brien.
