Chancellors and presidents

Morehouse named Robert Frank­lin Jr. president, effective July 2. Franklin previously served as a presidential distinguished professor of social ethics at Emory … Marvin Krislov was chosen as president of Oberlin … Purdue selected France Córdova as president. Córdova had been chancellor at UC Riverside … Mark Huddleston will become president of New Hampshire. He had been president at Ohio Wesleyan … Charles Dunn announced his retirement as president of Henderson State, effective June 30, 2008. After a six-month sabbatical, he intends to return to the university as a professor of political science.

Directors of athletics

Emory and Henry selected Bob Johnson as its new director of athletics … Miami (Florida) Director of Athletics Paul Dee announced his resignation, effective June 2008. He plans to join the school’s faculty … West Florida named Todd Davis athletics director. He succeeds Richard Berg, who will retire after 19 years at the helm of the program … Arkansas-Little Rock extended Chris Peterson’s contract.

Associate director of athletics

Penn State selected Mark Boden­schatz as associate athletics director of facilities and operations. He replaces Herb Schmidt, who retired December 31.

Coaches

Baseball — Bill Miller retired from Texas Lutheran. He will continue to serve as athletics director … Florida International accepted head coach Danny Price’s resignation after 28 years … Steve Traylor will retire from his post at Wofford … Rich Alday resigned from New Mexico, effective at the close of the season ... Mitch McLeod left North Dakota State.

Men’s basketball — Loyola (Illinois) extended Jim Whitesell’s contract through the 2012 season … Stephon Leary is the new coach at Texas A&M International … Cabrini selected Greg Herenda … North Carolina extended the contract of head coach Roy Williams through 2015 … Jim Woolridge was selected as the head coach at UC Riverside … Reggie Theus signed a new contract with New Mexico State ... Frank Ostanik resigned from Alaska Fairbanks.

Men’s basketball assistants — Princeton added Tony Newsom and Brian Earl to its staff … Georgia State hired Scepter Brownlee. The program also tabbed Jeff Conarroe as director of basketball operations … Von Webb will return to UC Riverside as an assistant coach … Bradley assistant Chuck Buescher announced his retirement. Alvin Brooks III will replace Buescher as an assistant coach … Tom Herrion was chosen as the top assistant at Pittsburgh … Quinnipiac hired Sean Doherty and Eric Eaton … Saint Louis selected Angres Thorpe … LSU hired Chad Dollar.

Women’s basketball — New England named Anthony Ewing head coach … Samantha Morrow was hired at Texas-Arlington to replace the retiring Donna Capps … Geneseo State chose Scott Hemer to lead its program. He replaces Kris Ruffo, who was at the helm for five seasons … Devin Gotham was selected as head coach at Nazareth … Kelly Warnke is the new coach at Pacific Lutheran. She had been an assistant with Baldwin-Wallace … Bonnie Henrickson signed a five-year contract that will keep her with the Kansas program through 2011 … Matt Bollant was named head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay … Hiram named Andrea Preston as its head women’s basketball coach … Illinois named Jolette Law head coach.

Women’s basketball assistants — Charlie Maihos retired after 23 seasons at Salem State … Niagara added Jamie Horn to its staff … Washington named former Missouri State head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson an assistant … Wingate added Debra Savino to its staff … Alabama named Valecia Tedder as its director of basketball operations. Tedder was most recently the head coach at Francis Marion … Bob Starkey was promoted to associate head coach at LSU. Starkey served as the team’s interim head coach during the 2007 NCAA tournament and led the Tigers to the Final Four … Charlotte hired Angela Ortega … Southeast Missouri State selected Chris Harris … Georgia State selected Kyle Snipes … Rider hired Rashana Barnes ... Allison Gregory joined the staff at Appalachian State.


Field hockey — Rhode Island hired Amanda Heryla to lead the program.


Football — Montana State released head coach Mike Kramer.

Football assistants — Washington selected Nicole Morry as director of football external relations … Robert Morris promoted Scott Farison to defensive coordinator … San Jose State announced Jeff Hammerschmidt will coach linebackers ... Wyoming named Brian Herzog strength and conditioning coach.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey — Margot Page agreed to a contract extension at Niagara.


Rowing — After serving in a part-time capacity for four seasons, Erick Thiemke was promoted to a full-time position as men’s and women’s rowing coach at Clark.


Men’s and women’s skiing — Colby announced that Danny Noyes will return to his alma mater as head coach of the men’s and women’s Alpine programs.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Pac­if­ic Lutheran hired Lynnette Buffington as women’s coach.

Softball — Morehead State’s Jill Kar­woski resigned.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Joel Rollings was chosen as head coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater … Sweet Briar tabbed Alexander Kuhn as head swim coach and aquatics director … Millikin hired Charlie King as head men’s and women’s coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Kevin Girard will coach both the men’s and women’s teams at Lawrence.

Men’s and women’s tennis assistant — Duke named Ramsey Smith associate head coach.

Men’s and women’s track and field — Mount Olive announced it will add men’s and women’s outdoor track and field next spring. Head cross country coach Beth Green will take on the additional coaching duties.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Wentworth coach Jason Jeffers announced his resignation … Daniel Webster reinstituted men’s volleyball as a varsity sport. Russ Friedland was selected to serve as both men’s and women’s head coach at the school.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants — Robert Frost joined the women’s staff at Bowling Green … Jason Dupler was added to the San Jose State women’s staff.

Staff

Administrative — Cathy Pace was promoted to assistant to the director of athletics/coordinator of employee services at Nova Southeastern.

Business — Jeremy Bulen was hired as business manager of the athletics department at Nova Southeastern

Development — Wes Burtner was promoted to director of the Bruin Club at Belmont … Washington hired Scott Holt as assistant director of fund development.

Facilities — Betsy Johnson was named manager of the Nordstrom Tennis Center at Washington.

Marketing — Belmont promoted Bari Watson to director of marketing and external affairs and Debbie Chenoweth to coordinator of promotions and special events … Kim Carbo was promoted to manager of marketing and special events at Nova Southeastern.

Sports information — Mickey Smith resigned his position at Lewis to pursue a career in the financial industry.

Ticket operations — Scott Tester was hired as assistant director of ticket sales and customer service at Washington.

Conferences

The Ohio Valley Conference hired Jackie Mynarski as assistant commissioner for institutional services. Mynarski most recently worked at Portland.

Notables

Bowling Green head women’s volleyball coach Denise Van De Walle received the George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball award.

Deaths

Former Liberty Chancellor Rev. Jerry Falwell died May 15 at the age of 73. Falwell founded the university in 1971 … Winthrop basketball player DeAndre Adams died May 16 from injuries he suffered in a car accident. The 20-year-old sophomore played in all 35 of the team’s games last season … Former Southern California football standout Charley Ane died May 9 from pneumonia. He was 76 … Stanley Duncan Jr., a psychology professor and faculty athletics representative at Chicago, died May 15. He was 71. Duncan served as FAR at Chicago for more than 25 years. He was a pioneer in the study of face-to-face interaction.
