Director of athletics


Lee McElroy signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at Albany (New York) through 2011.

Faculty athletics representative

Radford appointed Elizabeth Dore to the position of faculty athletics representative. Dore assumes a post previously occupied by Charles Hayes. Dore is an associate professor in Radford’s educational studies department.

Associate directors of athletics

Southern Mississippi hired Jason Gray as the senior associate director of athletics for compliance and student services. Gray had served as assistant athletics director for compliance at Rice since 2000 … Rick Leddy, associate athletics director and sports information director at Southern Connecticut State, retired after working at his alma mater for 40 years — including four years as a student assistant. During his tenure, Leddy saw the Owls win nine Division II national titles. He will continue in his role as board secretary for the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Assistant directors of athletics

Stony Brook promoted Courtney Boergers to assistant director of athletics for student-athlete development. She previously held the position of director of student-athlete development … Cal State Northridge selected Bob Vazquez as assistant athletics director for media relations. Vazquez spent the past 24 years as athletics media relations director at Stanford.

Coaches

Baseball assistants — Clemson tabbed Toby Bicknell.

Men’s basketball assistant Chris Brown was added to the staff at New Jersey City … Steve O’Sullivan joined the Army staff.

Women’s basketball – After 19 seasons at the helm of the Norfolk State program, James Sweat announced this will be his last year leading the Spartans. During his tenure, Sweat has compiled a record of 343-210 and led the team to five Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles. Sweat also spent seven seasons as head coach at Hampton, winning 183 games during that time.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Karl Honma was selected as head coach at Chaminade.

Field hockey — Robert Morris named Olivia Netzler as head coach. A three-year letter-winner at Louisville, Netzler ranks third in career points for the Cardinals with 80. She becomes the second head coach in program history and replaces Lisa Bray, who recently resigned her post.

Football — Mike Bellotti agreed to a five-year contract extension at Oregon. Bellotti has led the Ducks to bowl appearances in 10 of his 12 years at the helm … Pat Cerroni will serve as interim coach at Wisconsin-Oshkosh … Rich Brooks finalized a four-year contract at Kentucky … Montana signed Bobby Hauck to a one-year contract … Bret Bielema inked a five-year contract that will keep him at Wisconsin through January 2012. Bielema led the Badgers to a 12-1 record last season in his first year at the helm … Mose Rison was named head coach at North Carolina Central … Bobby Wilder will be the head coach at Old Dominion, which resumes varsity football in 2009 after a 69-year absence … UCLA extended Karl Dorrell’s contract by one year.

Football assistants — Boise State assistant Sean Kugler resigned his post to take a similar position with the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League … Kevin Ross was released from the Army staff … California promoted Jim Michalczik to offensive coordinator. He has spent the last five seasons coaching the Golden Bears offensive line … Tusculum assistant David Elsenrath has resigned his post. Elsenrath accepted a similar position at Valdosta State. The program added Marc Kolb and Shap Boyd to its staff. Kolb was named offensive coordinator after serving as assistant head coach at Missouri-Rolla. Boyd will assume the defensive coordinator post after three years at Washington U. in St. Louis … Delaware named Ben Albert associate head coach … Syracuse added Derrick Jackson as defensive line coach … Kansas State promoted Tim Tibesar to defensive coordinator … Memphis assistant head coach Clay Helton was promoted to offensive coordinator … Shawn Watson has been promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Nebraska … Idaho chose Mark Criner as defensive coordinator … … Kansas State tabbed Ron Brock as wide receivers coach … Former Washington State running back Steve Broussard will return to his alma mater as an assistant coach. He replaces Kelly Skipper … Chris Strausser will return to the Boise State sidelines, where he will coach the tight ends and serve as running game coordinator … Courtney Messingham was promoted to running backs coach at Southern Mississippi.  The program also hired Michael Grant to lead the wide receivers … Peter Vaas was named running backs coach and passing game coordinator at Duke. Danny Pearman was also added to the staff … Georgia Tech selected John Bond as offensive coordinator … Grant Heard was added at Western Michigan. He will work with wide receivers … After 14 years as an assistant at New Hampshire, Chip Kelly has been named offensive coordinator at Oregon. He replaces Gary CrowtonGregg Ricono resigned his post as offensive coordinator at Arkansas Tech … Elon announced the resignation of assistant Tony Trisciani, who accepted a head coaching position at a Pennsylvania high school. The program also announced the promotion of Shane Burnham to special teams coordinator … Texas Christian assistant Dick Winder announced his retirement. He has spent 41 years as a college coach … South Florida named Dan McCarney assistant head coach and defensive line coach, Mike Canales receivers coach and Wally Burnham associate head coach … Widener named Mike Silecchia offensive coordinator … Miami (Florida) named Jeff Stoutland offensive line coach and Tommie Robinson running backs coach.

Men’s and women’s golf — Ryan Leaf was named head men’s golf coach at West Texas A&M … Virginia women’s golf coach Jan Mann announced her retirement, effective at the end of the spring season. Mann has been the only coach in the four-year history of the program. During her tenure, she has directed the Cavaliers to two NCAA regionals, one NCAA championship appearance and a runner-up finish at the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference championships. Mann also served on the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee.


Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Hillary London will assume the designation of senior woman administrator at Sweet Briar. She is currently the school’s head women’s lacrosse coach and also serves as an assistant with the field hockey program.


Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistant — Former William Smith standout Brighde Dougherty will return to her alma mater as an assistant. Dougherty held the same position in 2005. While on the team, she participated on squads that won two league titles and appeared in three NCAA tournaments. After graduation, she was the head varsity coach at St. Rose High School in her home state of New Jersey.


Men’s and women’s soccer – Kevin East resigned his post as head men’s coach at New Jersey City to take a similar post at Rutgers-Newark. East won a school-record 123 games during his time with the program … Michael Giuliano was hired as head men’s soccer coach at Wheaton (Illinois). Giuliano comes to Wheaton from San Diego State, where he spent the past three seasons at the helm of the women’s program. Giuliano takes over a program that reached the 2006 Division III national championship game. He replaces Joe Bean, who retired in December after 38 seasons … San Francisco tabbed Mark Carr as its head women’s coach. Carr spent the past four seasons as an assistant on the UCLA staff, helping the Bruins to four consecutive Pacific-10 titles and College Cup berths … Erica Walsh became the head coach at Penn State … Felician will not renew the contract of head men’s coach Tony Scorciolla and assistant Mike Mueller. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 during his time at Caldwell, Scorciolla spent the past 10 years at Felician … Chaminade hired Peter Kirov as head women’s coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant — Former Auburn standout Kellie Evans has been hired as an assistant women’s coach at Oregon State.

Softball assistant — Westminster (Missouri) added Jackie Weber to its staff. Weber is the director of student activities at the college.


Men’s and women’s volleyball — Clarion named Jennifer Harrison as head women’s coach. Harrison spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at UMBC. She replaces interim coach Jodi Burns … Shepherd assistant coach Ty Hart has resigned his post … Gannon hired former Auburn assistant Matt Darling to lead the women’s program.

Staff

Academic services — Nevada tabbed Lori Friel as director of academics. Friel spent the past five years in a similar capacity at Ohio.

Business — Melody Webb was selected as assistant business manager at Maryland.

Sports information — Sweet Briar tabbed Cameron Adams as sports information director.

Strength and conditioning — Chris Holder was selected as director of strength and conditioning at San Jose State. He spent the past year as head coach for strength and conditioning with the football program … Central Michigan hired Dave Lawson as director of strength and conditioning.

Conferences

Angel Mason was selected as director of sports services for the Northeast Conference. Mason spent the past two years serving as athletics operations manager at Vassar … The American Southwest Conference named Greg Weghorst as director of media relations. Weghorst has served in the position in an interim capacity since August.

Notables

Canisius and Niagara announced that the two schools have developed an annual all-sports competition, called the Battle of the Bridge. The first year of competition will be the 2006-07 season, and the Canal Cup will be awarded to the victor … Learfield Marketing and the Black Coaches Association hired former NCAA staff member Troy Arthur as general manager of BCA Properties.

Deaths

Former Duke football student-athlete Tom Powers died at 77 … Bill Bradshaw, a Bowling Green Athletics Hall of Fame member, died January 29. He was 75 … Former Texas A&M coach Shelby Metcalf died February 8 at the age of 76. Metcalf spent 27 seasons as Aggies head coach, compiling a 438-306 mark during that time … Former Delaware football standout Bob Norris was killed February 13. Norris earned Associated Press honorable mention all-American honors in 1986 when he rushed for 804 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was 41 … Former Syracuse wide receiver J.J. Bedle died earlier this month. Bedle was 21.
