Faculty athletics representative


North Dakota State appointed Deland Myers as its faculty athletics representative. Myers is director of the School of Food Systems at the university.

Directors of athletics

Missouri extended the contract of Mike Alden through the 2011-2012 academic year … China Leigh Jude was named director of athletics at Cheyney. Jude most recently served as assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator at District of Columbia. She replaces Gregory Smith.

Assistant director of athletics

Frank MacDonald has resigned his post as assistant director of athletics and sports information director at Seattle Pacific. MacDonald spent the past 23 years at the university.

Coaches

Baseball – Davidson head coach Dick Cooke has been selected as an auxiliary coach for the USA Baseball team.

Men’s basketball – New Jersey City named Marc Brown interim men’s basketball coach. The former Siena standout recently retired after a 16-year professional playing career. He is the youngest son of Charles Brown, who recently stepped down as head coach at the university … Todd Sturgeon resigned his post at Indianapolis after 10 years as head coach. Assistant Royce Waltman was named interim coach … John Thompson III signed a six-year contract extension that will keep him at Georgetown through 2013 … UCLA and Ben Howland agreed on a new seven-year contract … Robert Moreland will return to Texas Southern as interim men’s basketball coach six years after finishing a 26-year stint with the program. He replaces Ronnie Courtney.

Men’s basketball assistants – Charles Peck was added to the St. Joseph’s (Long Island) staff … Billy Clapper was added to the Pittsburgh-Johnstown staff … San Diego State tabbed Mark Fisher as an assistant coach. The program’s former director of basketball operations takes over for Gregg GottliebAlex Mirabel was selected as an undergraduate assistant at New Jersey City … Florida Southern added Tae Norwood to its staff. Norwood replaces Randall Herbst, who took a position at Nebraska-Omaha … Doug West was selected as an assistant at Villanova, his alma mater … Hilbert tabbed Ryan Mahanna as an assistant coach … Paul Graham joined the Georgia State staff. He replaces Eugene Harris, who accepted a job as head coach at Florida A&M.

Women’s basketball – Post tabbed 2002 graduate Tracey Garofalo to lead its basketball and softball programs.

Men’s and women’s cross country – Eric Campbell was named head coach of the cross country and track and field programs at Florida International.

Equestrian assistant – St. Joseph’s (Long Island) named Alison Mooney assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Miami (Ohio) extended the contract of head men’s coach Enrico Blasi through 2017 … MIT tabbed Jim O’Meara as head women’s coach. O’Meara spent the past decade working as an assistant with the men’s program.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistant – After five years with the Northeastern men’s ice hockey program as a player, Joe Santilli will return as an assistant coach this season.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Wheaton (Massachusetts) hired Mike McCaffrey to lead its men’s program.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Brian Sprinkle was added to the women’s staff at Delaware.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant – Megan Wilson was hired at St. Joseph’s (Long Island).

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – St. Joseph’s (Long Island) tabbed Shinaide McAleavey as its head women’s coach. Kristen Schoelermann was selected as an assistant.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Carlose Casely was hired to lead the women’s program at Florida International … Sarah Johnston was named women’s coach at Kalamazoo.

Men’s and women’s track and field – Central Michigan tabbed Scott Carhoun as an assistant with the women’s program.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Ruben Volta will take over the Sacramento State women’s volleyball program in 2008, after serving as an assistant with the program for the last eight years. Volta will take over for Debby Colberg, who will retire at the end of the season.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants – Colin McMillan has been selected as an assistant at Penn State … Pacific added Jeff Hall to its staff … Michael Zlotkowski joined the Hilbert men’s coaching staff.

Wrestling – Pat Marsh resigned his post as wrestling coach at Augustana. A 1988 graduate of the college, Marsh won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin 142-pound title as a senior. The head coach since 2000, Marsh led his teams to an overall record of 66-45-1 and captured four conference titles.

Wrestling assistant – Davidson hired Joe Privitere as an assistant. Privitere spent the last two seasons at The Citadel.

Staff

Sports information – Bridgeport named Chuck Sadowski director of sports information. Sadowski most recently served as associate commissioner for media relations at the East Coast Conference, but has also worked at New Haven, Austin, Redlands, Chicago and New York U. He replaces Courtney Nogas … Pittsburgh-Greensburg chose Joe Hill as sports information director. Hill will retain his duties as head baseball coach. He replaces Kevin Conlon.

Notables

New Orleans Saints quarterback and former Purdue standout Drew Brees has made a $2 million grant to his alma mater … Konica Minolta has become the new title sponsor of the Gator Bowl Classic, in an agreement that extends through 2010.

Conferences

Rick Denny has been named baseball umpire-in-chief for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. He succeeds John DeedrickCarol Rivera was tabbed assistant commissioner for compliance and internal operations at the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Deaths

Former Cincinnati football player Bob Sign died September 25 at the age of 66 … Memphis football student-athlete Taylor Bradford was killed on September 30. The defensive lineman was 21 … Former Winthrop cross country and track and field student-athlete Matthew Kelleher died September 29 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. The four-time all-Big South Conference selection was 26 … Former Olympic great Al Oerter passed away October 1 at the age of 71. Oerter, who competed as a collegian at Kansas, won gold in the discus at the 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games … Mississippi track and field student-athlete Rodney Lydale Lockhart was killed on September 29. He was 20 … Former Texas Lutheran sports information director Henry Lehnhoff died September 30 at the age of 82.  Lehnhoff worked as sports information director at the school from 1988-98, and as associate sports information director from 1998-2003 … Minnesota State freshman cross country runner Catherine Delwiche died October 2. Delwiche was struck by a car while running on a sidewalk near campus.
