Directors of athletics


Kevin McGinniss announced his resignation as director of athletics at Mercy. He has been named director of athletics development at Rhode Island … Mark Linder was named director of athletics at North Alabama. Linder, who has spent the past four years leading the Missouri Western State athletics department, chairs the Division II Legislative Committee … Patricia Hughes was named interim athletics director at Montevallo. The school’s senior woman administrator and head women’s soccer coach, Hughes replaces Dennis Toney … Becker hired Frank Millerick as director of athletics. Millerick formerly spent time as athletics director and head baseball coach at Babson … Kristin Parnell has been named director of athletics at Emerson. She replaces Rudy Keeling, who left to become commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference … Mike O’Brien signed a three-year contract extension at Toledo … Massachusetts extended the contract of John McCutcheon for three years through 2012 … Marion Kirby announced her retirement from Guilford. Tom Palombo was named interim athletics director.

Associate directors of athletics

Robin Martin was tabbed as associate athletics director at Cincinnati. Previously the athletics director at Holy Names, Martin will also assume the designation of senior woman administrator at Cincinnati … Allison George was hired as the associate athletics director for communications at Georgia State. Previously the director of communications at Georgia Tech, George spent the last 20 years working in the school’s athletics department … Whit Babcock is the new associate athletics director at Missouri … Geoff Von Dollen was selected as associate athletics director for administration at Delaware State.

Assistant directors of athletics

Kalamazoo promoted Rob Passage to assistant director of athletics for facilities and operations. He will continue his role as head men’s basketball coach … Amber Burdge has been named assistant athletics director for student services at Stephen F. Austin … Ken Heaton was named assistant athletics director/compliance officer at NJCU after 18 seasons as the head baseball coach … New Haven hired Alicia Alford as assistant director of athletics for NCAA compliance and student development. She replaces Shamaree Brown.

Coaches

Baseball — Eric Alvarez was hired at NJCU. Alvarez, previously an assistant with the program, replaces Ken Heaton, who resigned to become the school’s assistant athletics director/compliance officer ... Eric Frese was hired permanently at Wisconsin-Platteville after serving as interim coach last season … Montevallo hired John Jarnagin to replace Greg Goff, who took over the program at Campbell … TCNJ tabbed Dean Glus as interim coach … T.J. Kohler is the new head coach at Becker. Formerly the assistant coach at Kenyon, Kohler will also serve as an assistant football coach … Paul Knight was hired to lead the Lenoir-Rhyne program. John Hendricks was promoted to associate head coach.

Baseball assistants — Charlie Mackinnon, Trevor Horwath and Cody Piechocki were named assistants at Kalamazoo … Jason Watson was named assistant coach at Wisconsin-Platteville … John Maley was named pitching coach at Incarnate Word … Cleveland State added Cliff Cook to its staff.

Men’s basketball — Brian Gorman was selected as head coach at Becker … Dino Gaudio was named head coach at Wake Forest. Gaudio replaces Skip Prosser, who died suddenly last month … Lehigh promoted Brett Reed to head coach. Reed replaces Bill Taylor, who took the top spot at Ball State … TCNJ tabbed Matt Hunter as interim coach. He takes over for John Castaldo, who resigned to concentrate on his new post as the school’s athletics director … New Paltz State hired Dagan Nelson to lead its program. He succeeds Doug Pasquerella.

Men’s basketball assistants — Richard Mendoza was named at San Francisco State … Former Temple standout Mark Macon was added to the staff at Binghamton. Macon previously coached at his alma mater and Georgia State … Jeff Gard will serve in a permanent capacity at Wisconsin-Platteville … Western Illinois added Rodney Perry to its staff … Albany hired Jeremy Friel as an assistant coach and Kenny Dagostino as director of operations. Friel previously served as the program’s director of operations … Mount St. Mary’s promoted Kevin Robinson Jr. to second assistant and added Dan Englestad to the staff … Robert Jones was hired at Norfolk State.

Women’s basketball — Oneonta State hired Daphne Thompson. She replaces Dan McGraw, who left to become the top assistant at Binghamton … Lewis tabbed Lisa Carlsen as head coach. Carlsen replaces Lynn Plett and will also assume duties as the department’s senior woman administrator.

Women’s basketball assistants — Lipscomb added former player Katie Beth Pate as an assistant … Francis Marion added John BasalduJackie Parsley was selected as an assistant at Wisconsin-Platteville … Leigh Ann Woodley has joined the Ferrum staff. She replaces Katrina Williams, who was named head coach at Averett … UNC Asheville promoted Adell Harris to associate head coach. Brooke Johnson will replace Faisal Khan as an assistant coach … Ben Coomes was hired at Belmont to replace Beth Stark … Felician named Fred Kressaty to its staff … Georgia State hired former Olympic gold medalist Bridgette Gordon as an assistant coach.
Bowling — Amber Griffin, a member of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s first varsity bowling team, has returned to the program as head coach … Joseph Ambrose was named coach at Kutztown. A 27-year veteran of the PBA tour, Ambrose is the first coach in program history.

Men’s and women’s cross country — New Haven graduate Kevin LaSure will return to his alma mater as head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs … Bill Hodge will take over the cross country and track and field programs at Mount Olive.

Men’s and women’s cross country assistants — Wisconsin-Platteville hired Chris Rotzenberg to assist in cross country and track and field … Baruch named Tiffany Richmond as an assistant with the women’s program … Dan Matena will serve as a cross country and track and field assistant at Belmont. He replaces Scott Bennett.

Field hockey — Transylvania selected Susannah Kilbourne to lead the program. Sarah Oakley will join the staff as an assistant.

Field hockey assistants — Lauren Jones and Lauren Mazzola were added to the staff at Bridgewater State

Football — Lincoln (Pennsylvania) named Olabaniji Abanishe as its head football coach … Bronco Mendenhall signed a contract extension that will keep him at BYU through 2011.

Football assistants — Wisconsin-Platteville named D.J. Lawrence, Ryan Munz and Derek Hoff assistant coaches … Massachusetts-Dartmouth added Tim McCarthy, Jim Lanagan, Steve Faniel, Jon Perry, Dan DeCosta, Matt Sheehan and Ryan StruthersGabriel Stovall, Eric Wilks, David Wood, Jose Santana, Mike Pittman and Jason Manson were added to the Becker staff … Rob Cushman, Gabe Luvara and Mark Ross joined the Ithaca coaching staff.

Men’s and women’s golf — St. Andrews Presbyterian named Lisa Becka head coach of the men’s and women’s programs … Cleveland State named Steve Weir as its head coach.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey — After 11 years at the helm, Laura Halldorson resigned her post as head coach of the Minnesota women’s program. Halldorson guided the Golden Gophers to national championships in 2000, 2004 and 2005 … Jodi McKenna was named head women’s coach at Wesleyan (Connecticut). She replaces Donna Wright … Lance Brady was hired as associate head coach of the Becker men’s program.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistant — St. Cloud State hired Mike Gibbons as assistant men’s coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — St. Joseph’s (Maine) named Mike Edgar as the first coach of its men’s program. The team will begin intercollegiate competition this spring.

Rowing assistants — Delaware added Richard Wilson, Maria Bellumori, Jenn Boutin and Nikki Jackowsky to its staff.

Men’s and women’s skiing — Colby-Sawyer hired Garrett Lashar, who replaces Danny Noyes.

Men’s and women’s soccer — After 29 years with the men’s program, Robert Montgomery has resigned his post at Adelphi. Carolo Aquista has been selected as the new head coach … St. Francis (New York) named Tom Giovatto interim coach for the 2007 season … Taskin Guven was hired as head coach at Becker … Notre Dame (Maryland) tabbed Mandy Libber as interim coach. Libber takes over for Jay Golomb, who resigned after seven years at the helm … Tony Guinn was named women’s coach at Western Illinois … Barton selected Michael Michalakis to lead the women’s program. He succeeds Stacey Tant, who resigned after four years … Shenandoah hired Elizabeth Pike as head women’s coach … Seamus O’Connor was named as the head women’s coach at Chestnut Hill.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants — Emory selected Jacques Edeline as an assistant coach … Kristi Eyler was named assistant women’s coach at Francis Marion … Florida International added Matias Asorey and Joe Massi to its men’s staff. George Moyssidis was named a volunteer coach … Jude Blocker will serve as an assistant at Wisconsin-Platteville … Holy Cross tabbed John TriceKerri Fahres and Lane Davis were added as assistant women’s coaches at UC Riverside … NJCU added Rhodri Harvey and William Shapiro III to its women’s staff … Lee Pollard was selected as an assistant at Felician.

Softball — Becker named Michelle Littlefield as head coach … Kalamazoo hired Michael Garoutte as head softball coach … Nora May-Davila was named head coach at Incarnate Word.

Softball assistants — Adelphi added Olympian Danielle Henderson to its staff as a pitching coach. Sunny Oelling was also named as an assistant coach … Jen Kernahan has been hired as an assistant at Belmont. She replaces Andrea Gore, who left in May … Olympic gold medalist and former Texas standout Cat Osterman has joined the DePaul softball staff as an assistant coach. The only collegiate player to win the USA Softball Player of the Year award three times, Osterman led the Longhorns to the Women’s College World Series in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Men’s and women’s tennis
Jarod Camerota was hired as head men’s coach at Georgia State … Lipscomb has restructured its tennis program. Lynn Griffith, coach of the program for the past 27 years, has been named director of tennis. Andrew Harris will serve as men’s coach and Kristin Lusk will lead the women … Yeshiva tabbed Roger Crawford as its head women’s coach … Georgia State named Miha Lisac coach of the women’s program.

Men’s and women’s tennis assistants — Kentucky tabbed former Georgia Tech standout Lyndsay Shosho as an assistant with the women’s program. She replaces David Vest … Belmont selected Felipe Lima as an assistant coach with the men’s program.

Men’s and women’s track and field — Brendon Gilroy has been selected to lead the McNeese State program … UNC Asheville hired Jesse Norman as its head cross country and track and field coach … Thomas Smith was tabbed at Bridgewater State. He replaces Ed Delgado, who retired after 22 seasons.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistants — Former Emory all-American Ashley DeMarco will return to her alma mater as an assistant coach … Katie Kelley has been added to women’s staff at Texas-San Antonio.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Sara Haney is the new women’s volleyball coach at Maine-Farmington … Kalamazoo’s Jeanne Hess was named senior woman administrator of the athletics department … Mary Boller-Easterbrook was named head women’s coach at Hilbert … Debby Colberg has resigned her post as head coach at Sacramento State after 31 seasons and 799 victories … Post hired Michael Brienza as head coach … Michelle Patton was named head women’s coach at San Francisco State. The program will begin during the 2008-09 academic year.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant — Former Samford assistant Erin Heffner has accepted a similar role at Montevallo.

Staff

Administrative — Rachel Gecik, Joe Jasin, Elaina Matsko and Katie Schneider were named interns at Cleveland State.

Athletic trainer — Karin Krzal was named athletic trainer at Maine-Farmington …


Assistant athletic trainers — Abigail Aycock was named graduate assistant athletic trainer at Montevallo … Nadia Hamad and Chris Wendling have joined the Ferrum staff … Chestnut Hill hired Nicole Dietrich as assistant athletic trainer … Molly Anderson was named director of sports medicine/associate head trainer at Western Illinois … UC Riverside hired Jessika Hunt Lauren Eck was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Wentworth. She replaces Dawn Garbino, who stepped down after nine years … Belmont hired Kelly Bachus … Mitchell added Anna Braun and Mike Berry as assistant athletic trainer interns … Mount Olive hired Angelica Ortiz and Amber Snyder.

Development — Zach Goines was named director of major gifts at Iowa State. 
Marketing — Sean Sawyer was selected as coordinator of sales and sponsorship at Belmont … Nick Kallail has been chosen as a marketing coordinator at Rice … Megan Donald was promoted to assistant director of marketing for Web site operations at Elon.

Sports information — Marc Meyers was chosen as sports information director at Maine-Farmington … Washington promoted Jeff Bechthold to director of athletics communications.

Sports information assistants — Scott Zavitz was selected as media relations assistant director at UC Riverside … Indiana added Matt Brady, Kyle Kuhlman and Melanie Schneider as assistant directors. Nate Wiechers joined the staff as a media relations assistant … Matt Dunaway has been named assistant sports information director at Rice … Elizabeth Ballard was added as assistant sports information director at Elon … Bryan Moore was chosen as an intern at Bradley.

Conferences

Chuck Sullivan was named director of communications at the Big East … The Patriot League hired Kerry Kenny as Media and External Relations Assistant. A former basketball student-athlete at Lafayette, Kenny is currently vice-chair of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He recently contributed a post to the Double-A Zone, the official weblog of the NCAA ... Al Barba was named assistant commissioner for media relations of the California Collegiate Athletic Association … Brian Pulley has been named assistant commissioner for external affairs at the Ohio Valley Conference … The Northeast Conference hired Benjamin Badua as an administrative intern.

Corrections

In the college football overtime chart that appeared in the August 13 issue of The NCAA News, the game between Adams State and Nebraska-Kearney on September 19, 1998, lasted five overtimes instead of six.

Notables

Lew Hartzog, Cyrus Jones, Tom Jones, Beverly Kearney, John Mitchell, Irv Mondschein, Jim Sackett and Kart Schlademan will be inducted into the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Deaths

UMKC Assistant Athletics Director Cynthia Gabel died August 20 after an extended battle with cancer. Gabel worked eight years on the UMKC staff after serving for 19 years on the enforcement staff at the NCAA national office ... Former Notre Dame kicker Harry Oliver died August 8. He was 47 … Ed Brown, quarterback for San Francisco’s undefeated 1951 team, died recently … Elmer Gross, who reached the Final Four as both a player and coach with Penn State, died June 29. He was 90 … Former Florida A&M basketball coach Willie Booker died at the age of 65 … Ken MacAfee, who played football at Boston U. and Alabama, died at the age of 77 … Former Loyola (Illinois) water polo standout Dan O’Connell died July 15. He was 43 … Former Winona State pitcher Patrick Holmes died in the August bridge collapse in Minneapolis. He was 36.
