Chancellors and presidents

Cheyney named Michelle Howard-Vital president. Howard-Vital had been interim chancellor of Winston-Salem State … Charlie Nelms will become chancellor at North Carolina Central. He recently served as vice president for institutional development and student affairs at Indiana … Brigham Young-Hawaii selected Steven Wheelwright as president … Randolph tabbed John Klein as president. Klein had been executive vice chancellor of Washington U. in St. Louis … Iowa hired former Purdue Provost Sally Mason as its president … Tomás Morales is the new president at Staten Island.

Directors of athletics

After nearly a decade at the helm of the Tusculum program, Ed Hoffmeyer has resigned his post as athletics director. He has accepted a position outside of athletics with his alma mater, Mars Hill … Edward Aquilone has stepped down as director of athletics at St. Francis (New York). Irma Garcia has replaced him … Kelly Landry Mehrtens was named director of athletics at North Carolina-Wilmington. Most recently associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Kansas, Mehrtens has also worked at Illinois, Miami and Northeastern. She replaces Mike CapaccioKen Ralph announced his resignation from Rensselaer to accept the same position at Colorado College. Kevin Beattie was named acting athletics director at Rensselaer. Ralph replaces Julie Soriero at Colorado College … Mario Moccia received a one-year contract extension at Southern Illinois … Roger Welsh has announced his retirement as athletics director at Capital, effective December 31 … UC Irvine tabbed Paula Smith as interim director of athletics. Smith will fill in for Bob Chichester, who stepped down after five years … Debbie Lazorik will leave her post as director of athletics at Marietta after 17 years at the helm of the department. Lazorik will transition to the college’s advancement office as a special assistant to the vice president on September 1 … Charles Brown has signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him at UMBC through 2011 … Steve Pederson agreed to a five-year contract extension with Nebraska … Sonny Travis resigned his position as athletics director and head men’s soccer coach at Virginia Wesleyan. He was named head men’s soccer coach at Emory. Virginia Wesleyan will conduct a national search for his replacement.

Associate directors of athletics

Randolph-Macon promoted Jeff Burns to associate athletics director and director of development for athletics … Campbell appointed Tony Hatmaker associate athletics director for compliance and academic services.

Assistant directors of athletics

Auburn promoted Cathie Helmbold to assistant athletics director for student-athlete support services … Chris Taylor was named assistant athletics director for facilities and events at St. Peter’s. Taylor was formerly the school’s football coach … Newbury named Katie Greene as assistant athletics director and head women’s basketball coach … Esther Goldfeder will be assistant director of women’s athletics at Yeshiva … Long Beach State named Adam Wald assistant athletics director for development and Randy Langejans assistant athletics director/business manager … McNeese State named alumnus Scott Pendarvis assistant director of athletics/business manager. Pendarvis was a football student-athlete for the Cowboys from 2001-04 … Illinois State named Peyton Deterding assistant athletics director for facilities and operations … Lafayette hired Kaitlyn Cerco to be assistant athletics director for compliance … Jason Holtman accepted a position as assistant athletics director for academic services at Central Michigan.

Coaches

Baseball — Josh Tehonica resigned his post as head baseball coach and coordinator of athletics operations at Misericordia … Nick Mingione, previously a volunteer assistant at Kentucky, accepted an assistant coaching position at Western Carolina. Kentucky will replace Mingione with Keith Vorhoff … Ohio Wesleyan selected former Marietta assistant Tyler Mott to be interim head coach … Gannon hired Nate Cocolin.

Baseball assistant — Army selected Matt Reid as an assistant. Reid spent the past two years on the UNC Asheville staff.

Men’s basketball — Tennessee extended the contract of Bruce Pearl through 2013 … New England named Jason Mulligan head coach. Mulligan was an assistant coach at Wabash for six seasons.

Men’s basketball assistants — After a one-year sabbatical, Brian Pickering will return to his role as associate head coach at Keene State … Charles Holloway was selected as a volunteer assistant at Mount Olive … Texas-Tyler hired Justin Henley … Virginia Wesleyan promoted Brad Dunleavy to the top assistant’s position and hired Marques Fitch … North Dakota State tabbed Will Ryan.

Women’s basketball — Southern Connecticut State tabbed Meghan Burke Brown as head coach of the defending Division II national champions … Amanda Rodgerson was selected at Wentworth. She replaces Carrie Crawford, who stepped down in May after four seasons at the helm … Bill Agronin resigned his post at Niagara after 13 seasons.

Women’s basketball assistants — Longwood added Anthony Crocitto and Elizabeth Stich to its staff … Kate Fillion has been elevated to associate head coach at Keene State. Ryan Margaitis and Russ Pickering will join the program as first-year assistants … Darin Thrun was named assistant coach at Eastern Michigan … Cassi Little will join the Texas-Tyler staff … Former Central Michigan star Sally Sedlar Payne accepted a job at Virginia Wesleyan … Mississippi State named Joey Burton director of women’s basketball operations.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Butler hired Matt Roe as cross country and track and field coach. He replaces Joe FranklinChristopher Covert was selected to lead the women’s cross country and track and field programs at Southern Connecticut State.

Field hockey — Joyce Ann Koubaroulis replaced Kim-Michael Mertes at Virginia Wesleyan … Rochester selected Wendy Andreatta.

Field hockey assistant — Wheaton (Massachusetts) hired Patricia Glennon as an assistant … Kim Decker Doren was hired at Virginia Wesleyan.

Football — Frankie DeBusk, the head football coach at Tusculum, was named interim director of athletics at the college. The winningest football coach in school history, DeBusk will replace Ed Hoffmeyer.

Football assistants — Steve Neal was named wide receivers coach at Wayne State (Michigan) … Dave Wommack was named outside linebackers coach at Southern Mississippi … Former Connecticut wide receiver Matt Cutaia was selected as an assistant at Hobart … Johns Hopkins promoted Bob Chesney to defensive coordinator and named Eddy Augustin, John Baker, Chris Fallon and Leif Glynn to the staff … Danny Nutt stepped down as running backs coach at Arkansas. He will be replaced by Tim Horton … Former Kansas State quarterback Jonathan Beasley will lead the wide receivers at Montana State … Jim Marshall was hired as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Incarnate Word … Stephen F. Austin selected Brad LairdKyle Reade, Jim Sanders and Alex Arguello joined the Augustana (Illinois) staff … Albany selected Samson Brown.

Men’s and women’s golf — Marian Blain resigned as head coach at Colgate. She has held the top post since 1982 … American International hired Gary Ensor to lead the men’s program. He replaces Gary Wright, who will continue as men’s ice hockey coach … Otterbein appointed Nathanael Petry as head women’s coach. Petry already coaches the men’s program … Virginia Wesleyan tabbed Conrad ParkerSteve Weir will coach the men’s and women’s teams at Cleveland State.

Men’s and women’s golf assistant — Stephanie Wilbur was hired at Texas-Tyler.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics assistant — Penn State hired Travis Doak for its women’s program.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Andrew Geison was hired as men’s coach at DeSales. He replaces Donovan QuillTim Tuttle was named head men’s coach at Farmingdale State, his alma mater. He replaces Steve D’Argenio … King’s (Pennsylvania) hired Laurie Anthony to coach its women’s team. She replaces Justine Reeber.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants — Delaware added former Notre Dame standout Kristin Hopson to the women’s staff … Drew Ginsberg was selected as a men’s assistant at Randolph-Macon … Notre Dame announced Meredith Simon will assist with the women’s program.

Men’s and women’s skiing — Whitman selected Calisa Schouweiler to coach men’s and women’s Nordic skiing. She replaces Nathan Alsobrook, who accepted the same position at Bowdoin.

Men’s and women’s soccer — NYU hired Werner Dasbach as head women’s coach … Emory tabbed Sonny Travis as interim head coach of the men’s program. Travis comes to Emory after 18 years at Virginia Wesleyan … Christian Gonzalez announced his resignation at Mercy … Eastern Connecticut State named Greg DeVito its fifth men’s soccer coach. It is DeVito’s first collegiate head coaching position. DeVito was an assistant under former head coach Frantz Innocent, who retired last spring. He also has experience as a prep and club coach … Mike McFarland accepted the men’s coaching job at Virginia Wesleyan … Bill Kelly will coach the women’s program at Bard.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants — Matt Ristuccia has been hired as an assistant men’s coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). The college also added Byron Brown and Brad Knighton as women’s assistants … Laura Koontz, the 2006 Division III player of the year, will assist the women’s program at Virginia Wesleyan.

Softball — Kentucky selected Rachel Lawson as its head softball coach. Lawson spent the last three years at Western Kentucky … Shepherd announced that Leslie Lopez will become its head coach after spending the last two seasons as an assistant at Slippery Rock … Melissa Thompson was named at Notre Dame (Maryland) and will be the college’s first head coach since 1986, the last year it sponsored softball as a varsity sport.

Softball assistants — Mary Vande Hoef and Jake Fisher were added to the Central (Iowa) staff … Crystal Vargas was selected at NJCU … Keith Bell and Christy Shipley-Gipson were added at Texas-Tyler.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Assumption College added women’s swimming as a varsity sport. Stuart Cromarty was named head coach of the program.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistants — Delaware added Meredith Law and Levan Beridze to its staff as graduate assistants … Chelsi Day joined the Keene State staff as an assistant diving coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Washington (Maryland) named Dave Marshall as head men’s and women’s coach. Ellis Ferreira was selected as senior assistant coach … Craig Mours was named head coach at Carroll, his alma mater. He replaces Rick Mobley, who stepped down to concentrate on his roles as men’s soccer coach and director of sports information … Virginia Wesleyan hired Worth Richardson to be director of tennis.

Men’s and women’s track and field — Arkansas State selected Lon Badeaux.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistants — Todd Lane will coach the jumps and combined events group at LSU … After five years as the distance coach at Boston College, John Mortimer will assume a similar position at Kentucky.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Whitman tabbed Carolyn Papineau to replace Dean Snider as head coach. Snider has assumed responsibilities as the school’s director of athletics … Otterbein hired Monica McDonald as head women’s coach. She replaces Sharon SextonElise Cooper was named the women’s coach at Montclair State.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant — Nhut Chau was hired at Wentworth Institute.

Staff

Academic services — Kelley Tiarks was tabbed as an academic services coordinator at Bryant … Elon added Cayce Crenshaw as director of academic support for athletics. She comes from a similar position at James Madison.

Athletic trainers — After five years as an assistant athletic trainer at Kenyon, Erik Barkley has been named head athletic trainer at Fredonia State. Alicia Scharett was named assistant athletic trainer at the school … Jim Shorten was named head athletic trainer at Longwood … Georgia State chose Robert Murphy as head athletic trainer … Texas-Tyler named Rebekah Grube and Dierdre Scotter as athletic trainers.

Assistant athletic trainer — Jennifer Cloud was named assistant athletic trainer at South Carolina-Aiken.

Development — Elon promoted Brian Tracy to director of the Phoenix Club. Sarah Thomas, an assistant director of admissions the last two years, has been named assistant director of the Phoenix Club … Former Long Beach State student-athlete Wayne Stickney-Smith was hired as membership coordinator for his alma mater.

Sports information — Kenny Kline and Kenny Riedel were selected as media relations interns at Delaware … St. Francis (New York) announced the hiring of David Gansell as director of sports information and marketing … Roanoke selected Brad Moore to be director of athletics communications/events manager. He was sports information director at LaGrange … Ryan Eigenbrode, former associate director of athletics at Notre Dame (Maryland), was named director of athletics communications at Loyola (Maryland).

Sports information assistant — Former St. Michael’s basketball player Will Rothermel has been named sports information intern at his alma mater.

Strength and conditioning — Long Island tabbed Richard James as strength and conditioning coach … Bryant named Tim Brien strength and conditioning coach.


Notables

Shawna Bowyer, an academic counselor at Penn State, recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Academic Advisors for Student-Athletes.

Conferences

Dick Cook announced his retirement as commissioner of the Capital Athletic Conference, effective on or before November 3. Cook was selected as the conference’s first commissioner in June 1993 … The Horizon League hired Tom Symonds as assistant director of communications, Brandy Ingles as championships, compliance and communications assistant and Pam Davis as administrative assistant for external operations. Nate Flannery has been promoted to coordinator of new media and technology … The Northeast Conference named Ralph Ventre assistant director of communications … The Big East named Benjamin Fairclough director of marketing and web development, Mia Brickhouse and Robert Weygand directors of sport administration and Marcus Dittmer and Shannon McNamara communications assistants.

Deaths

Former Maryland linebacker Michael Corvino died in an automobile accident … Dan Demmas, captain of the final football team at Saint Louis, died July 13 … Jim Gilstrap, coordinator of football support services at Oregon State, died July 19 … Former Georgia running back Kevin McLee died at the age of 52 … One of the preeminent football broadcasters of his generation, Bill Flemming died July 20 after a battle with prostate cancer. Flemming, 80, attended 11 Olympic Games and more than 600 events for ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.” … Former Delaware football student-athlete Travis Tkach died July 20 at the age of 25 … Former Tennessee staff member Ackron Porter died July 29. He was 69 … Former Winthrop volleyball student-athlete Cristi Curtis died earlier this month. Curtis, 28, was to begin head coaching responsibilities for the volleyball team at Aquinas College in August.­­
