Directors of athletics


Frank Diskin has retired from his post as athletics director at Rockhurst. Diskin began his tenure in 1985, and led the expansion of the athletics department from four varsity sports to 11. He also led the institution’s transition into Division II. Rebecca Morrisey was named interim athletics director at the university … Patricia Epps was named director of athletics at Franklin and Marshall, effective August 10. Epps has worked in the athletics department since 1978 and was appointed senior associate director of athletics in 2004. She has been the women’s tennis coach for the past 17 years. Epps replaces Tim Downes, who was selected as director of athletics at Emory, effective August 13. The former Dartmouth lacrosse student-athlete replaces Betsy StephensonAlice De Fazio has been appointed interim director of athletics at New Jersey City. In her 16 years at the university, De Fazio has served as women’s basketball coach, senior woman administrator and associate director of athletics. She succeeds Lawrence Schiner.

Associate directors of athletics

Kurt Esser has been named associate athletics director for external affairs at New Mexico. Esser had held a similar position at Nevada since November 2002. New Mexico also tabbed Rich Pickering as associate athletics director for business and finance. He replaces Bill RichardsNikki Cockrell was selected as associate athletics director for facilities and event management at St. Edward’s … Newberry named Matt DeWitt associate athletics director for external operations … Buffalo selected Donald Reed as associate athletics director for academic services. Reed spent the last seven years at Iowa State.

Assistant directors of athletics

New Mexico hired Henry Villegas as assistant athletics director for academic advisement … Delaware promoted Curt Krouse, Jen Chapman and Scott Selheimer to assistant directors of athletics … Miami (Ohio) hired Mike Pearson as assistant athletics director for communications and technology/athletics media relations director … Doug Fillis was promoted to assistant athletics director for development at Army … Thomas More selected Deanna Lee as its assistant athletics director … St. Peter’s named Chris Taylor assistant athletics director for facilities and events … Matt Sullivan was promoted to assistant athletics director for media relations at Southeastern Louisiana.

Coaches

Baseball — Korey Krueger has stepped down at Lawrence. A 1995 graduate of the university, Krueger had coached the Vikings for the past 10 years … Rick Dell has resigned his post as head coach at TCNJ to accept a position as director of baseball operations in Asia for Major League Baseball. Dell spent the past 27 years at TCNJ … Wingate hired Allen Osborne, effective immediately. Osborne spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach at Memphis … Mark Rowland has resigned his post at Brockport State after 11 seasons at the helm. Justin Beach was named interim coach at his alma mater.

Baseball assistants — LSU promoted Terry Rooney to associate head coach and announced the resignation of volunteer assistant Blair Barbier. Javi Sanchez will replace Barbier on the staff … Tennessee added Fred Corral to its staff. Corral had served as the program’s pitching coach in 2003 and 2004 … Scott Sullivan joined the Auburn staff as a volunteer assistant. The former Auburn standout played nine seasons in the Major Leagues … Nathan Prati was selected at Muskingum … Pete Pratt and Ken Picha were added to the St. Cloud State staff.

Men’s basketball — Joe Wojtylko will lead the program at Wells when it begins competing during the 2008-09 season. He will also serve as the school’s sports information director … Muskingum named Gene Ford head coach. Ford replaces his son Geno, who left to coach at Kent State.

Men’s basketball assistants — Ed Quick was selected as an assistant coach at Wilkes. He will also serve as the university’s director of intramurals … Colgate added Bill Holden to its staff. He replaces Kevin Curley … UMBC named Aki Thomas as an assistant … Steve Groothuis is the new coordinator of men’s basketball operations at Loyola (Illinois) … Sacramento State added Tarvish Felton to its staff. A three-year starter during his days at Southern Utah, Felton has seven years of coaching experience … Duquesne selected Bill Barton. The school also named Daryn Freedman director of basketball administration and recruiting coordinator.

Women’s basketball — Pittsburgh-Johnstown tabbed former Shippensburg assistant Sasha Leverentz as its new head coach … Dallas hired Jennifer Fleming to lead its program. Fleming was most recently an assistant at Army.

Women’s basketball assistants — Eastern Michigan added Leonard Drake and LaTonya Tate … Allison Pohlman was selected as an assistant coach at Drake. She replaces Micah Parker Arnika Clements will join the Auburn program as an administrative assistant … Loyola (Chicago) hired Glamora Maeweather … Dayton tabbed Lesley Dickinson.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Beth Green has stepped down as coach at Mount Olive … Derick Adamson was named head women’s cross country and track and field coach at Rowan … Dallas selected Troy Thrasher as the new coach for its programs … Thomas More hired Brian AlessandroMike Eighmey, who currently serves as men’s lacrosse coach at Wells, will take on new responsibilities as head coach of the cross country programs.

Men’s and women’s cross country assistant — Eric Schmuhl will work as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Muskingum.

Football assistants — Anthony Hurps was hired at Muskingum … Mark Robinson was selected as graduate assistant for football operations at Elon … Drake added Randy Ball and Tom Lichtenberg to its staff … Delaware named Jared Ambrose as a graduate assistant coach … Wendy Dunn was named football operations coordinator at San Jose State … Southeastern Louisiana hired Lamar James.

Men’s and women’s golf — Central Florida extended the contract of men’s coach Nick Clinard through 2011 … Bill Mattingly was hired as men’s and women’s coach at Butler. Mattingly spent the past 17 years as a high school coach in Indianapolis … Wittenberg named Jeff Roope head coach of the men’s and women’s programs.


Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Oneonta State tabbed Dan Mahar as its men’s coach. Mahar replaces Stewart Moan, who left to become head coach at Susquehanna … Indiana (Pennsylvania) promoted Liz Ramsey to full-time women’s coach. Ramsey was the interim coach last season … Karen MacCrate Henning was named head women’s coach at Colby … Eastern Connecticut State tabbed Justin Axel as its first full-time men’s coach. He replaces Nicholas Smith … Wagner named Karen Rife as its head women’s lacrosse coach. A former standout at Syracuse, Rife most recently led the program at Bryant. Wagner also hired Jason Rife, her husband, as head coach of the men’s program. He spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Bryant … Gordon Purdie was selected as men’s coach at Adelphi, his alma mater … Sarah Keating will become the women’s coach at Wells, her alma mater. She will also serve as an assistant for the women’s soccer program.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants — Former Mars Hill standout Richard Carrington will return to his alma mater as an assistant coach … Kristen Hordy was added to the Adelphi women’s staff.

Rowing — Leanne Crain signed a contract extension at Central Florida.

Men’s and women’s soccer — After a 17-year career, Frantz Innocent has retired as head coach of the men’s program at Eastern Connecticut State … Amanda Cromwell agreed to a contract extension at Central Florida … Randolph-Macon tabbed Sarah Wallace as an assistant women’s coach … Jonathan Thayil will take over the Shepherd men’s program. He succeeds Joseph Okoh, who resigned to take the head post at Howard … Wells hired Jamey Ventura as head women’s coach. Ventura will also serve as director of athletics for recruitment and retention … Francine Taylor will lead the women’s program at Lincoln (Pennsylvania). She will also serve as coordinator for marketing and promotions.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant — Maria Amicone will be an assistant with the women’s program at Muskingum.

Softball — Ali Ferrari was named coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania). Ferrari was an assistant with the program for the past three seasons … Beth McClendon will take over the program at Florida International. McClendon has spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Houston … San Francisco State named Cristina Byrne head coach. Byrne recently served as an assistant at UC San Diego … Brian Claypool has been named head softball coach at Holy Cross. Claypool, who served as a volunteer assistant during the 2007 season, was previously the head coach at Hartwick. He replaces Peter Maneggia, who resigned after two seasons … Paige Smith was tabbed to lead the Adelphi program … Angie Stackhouse was hired as a full-time assistant at Mansfield.

Softball assistants — Central Michigan added graduate Karen Hohs to its coaching staff … Colleen Thomas was hired as an assistant at Mount Olive … Alabama promoted Alyson Habetz to associate head coach.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — San Jose State tabbed Brian Tanner as its women’s diving coach. He replaces Peiling Gu, who retired after the season.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistant — Amanda Bos announced her resignation at Trinity (Texas).

Men’s and women’s tennis — Craig Schwartz was named head men’s coach at Queens (New York). He replaces Alan Landes, who retired after 27 seasons … Doanh Wang has been named head men’s and women’s coach at Colby … Trey Heath was named men’s coach at Florida Southern. He replaces Scott Linn, who accepted an assistant coaching post with Indiana … Susquehanna women’s coach Bob Jordan will assume coaching duties of the men’s program … Chaminade hired Blake Mosley as head women’s coach … Buffy Baker resigned as women’s tennis coach at Penn State. She has led the Nittany Lions for the last eight years.
 

Men’s and women’s tennis assistant — Mount Olive added Tim Dunford to its staff.

Men’s and women’s track and field — Juan Edney has been chosen to begin the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs at Rutgers-Newark … D’Andre Hill was named head coach of the Vanderbilt women’s program. She replaces Lori Shepard.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistants — John Woosley has resigned his post as throws coach at LSU … Nate Davis will join the women’s staff at Wisconsin.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Montclair State hired Elise Cooper as head women’s coach … Wentworth tabbed Nam Phan as its head men’s coach. He replaces Jason JeffersNedra Brown was named head women’s coach at Alabama A&M. She replaces Betty Austin, who took over as the school’s director of athletics … Schannon Gamble was chosen at Lincoln (Pennsylvania). She will also work as an academic coordinator.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants — Elizabeth Bottorf joined the staff at Muskingum … Eastern Michigan promoted Camila Olaio to assistant coach. The former Eagle served as a graduate assistant last season. She replaces Sara Schaub … Drake tabbed Erin Hirsch as an assistant coach.

Wrestling — Muskingum named Joe Montgomery head coach. He will also serve as an assistant with the football team.

Wrestling assistant — Ryan Wilman was added to the Army staff.

Staff

Academic services — Les Myers was named senior academic advisor for the New Mexico football program … Jason Kelly was promoted to director of academic services at Ohio.

Administrative — Elon added Fred Williams as athletics video coordinator and Jim Cross as intern for athletics facilities and equipment.

Athletic trainer — Westfield State tabbed Cheryl Lee as head athletic trainer … Elon selected Eric Storsved as director of athletic training services … Krystle Robleski has been selected as an athletic trainer at Assumption … Wells hired Elly Ventura as head athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainer — Deb Pickering was promoted to associate athletic trainer at Wells.

Business manager — Drake hired Leah Suzanne Combs as athletics business manager … Lincoln (Pennsylvania) hired Ronnisha Wilson as athletics business manager.

Compliance — Joey Hall was hired as the NCAA compliance officer at Arkansas Tech … Trevor Doll was chosen as director of compliance at Ohio.

Development — Penn State hired Nathan Althouse as student-athlete alumni relations coordinator. Mark Muhlhauser was tabbed as major gifts officer for the athletics department … Jim Shimon has been named director of athletics development at Drake … UNC Asheville hired Nate Brinkley as director of athletics development. Brinkley spent the past three years at Winthrop.

Marketing — Central Michigan hired Mike Dabbs as assistant director of marketing and promotions.

Operations — Delaware hired Bradley Cashman as supervisor of intercollegiate events.

Sports information — Josh Manck was named sports information director at Newberry … Davidson hired Marc Gignac as its sports information director. Gignac spent the past six years as director of athletics communications at Canisius … Lewis hired Ron Deuter as sports information director. He succeeds Mickey Smith, who resigned in May … After 26 years at West Virginia, Shelly Poe has accepted a job at Ohio State as director of football communications … Jon Gust was named director of media relations at Villanova … Ohio hired Jason Corriher as director of media relations.

Ticket operations — Carmen Greene was promoted to director of ticket operations at Ohio.

Conferences

Anthony Catanese, president of Florida Tech, has been named president of the Sunshine State Conference for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years ... The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference named Tanzania Williams assistant to the commissioner. Williams had served as director of women’s basketball operations at Virginia since 2004 … Jonathan Harper was named commissioner of the East Coast Conference. Harper previously served as vice president for sports information at Penn Atlantic, Inc. and as associate commissioner of the Northeast-10 Conference. He replaces Ed Manetta … The Southland Conference promoted Jared Florreich to director of media services. Jimmy Glenn was named assistant director of media services while associate commissioner Bruce Ludlow will now oversee football publicity for the conference.

Notables

The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association named Western New England’s John Klepacki the Division III Men’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year. The Golden Bears were 17-1 last season.

Deaths

Former Providence men’s basketball standout Jimmy Walker died July 2 after a battle with lung cancer. In three seasons with the Friars, Walker averaged 25.2 points per game and was named 1967 New England Player of the Year. He earned all-America honors three times and was selected first overall in the 1967 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons … Former Linfield football coach and Hawaii director of athletics Paul Durham died June 23. He was 93 … Former Rice football player J. Fred Duckett died June 25 at the age  of 74 … Doug Beard, senior associate director of athletics at Wisconsin, died June 22. He was 46 … Anderson softball coach Larry Holloway died July 8 at the age of 72. Holloway finished his career with 431 wins … Former Bucknell and Delaware tennis student-athlete Nancy Kressman died June 21. She was 42 … Former Drake athletics director Bob Karnes died July 12 at the age of 81. Karnes was named head track and field coach, cross country coach and director of the Drake Relays in 1955, and went on to lead his programs to 15 conference titles. Karnes served as director of athletics from 1968 until 1986 … Former Tennessee baseball and football student-athlete Ermel Howard died July 11. He was 88 … Former Temple football player Frank Kilroy died on July 10. He was 86.
