Directors of athletics

Manchester Director of Athletics and head wrestling coach Tom Jarman has announced his retirement, effective August 1. The former wrestling coach at Northwestern, Jarman helped 22 student-athletes become all-Americans during his tenure at Manchester … Florida extended the contract of Jeremy Foley … Alverno selected Bradley E. Duckworth. He also will serve as head women’s basketball coach … Mercyhurst announced the resignation of Pete Russo, effective August 31.

Associate directors of athletics

Buffalo elevated John Lambert to senior associate athletics director for development. The department also promoted Christina Hernandez to associate athletics director for internal operations. Anucha Browne was hired as senior associate athletics director for marketing and was designated as the school’s senior woman administrator … Clark promoted David Kulik to associate director of athletics. Kulik, who will continue in his role as men’s soccer coach, had been assistant athletics director for the last four years … Rice named Leslie Claybrook associate athletics director. She also will assume the designation of senior woman administrator … Colgate promoted Vicky Chun to associate director of athletics.  A former volleyball student-athlete at the school, Chun is in her third year with the athletics department.

Assistant directors of athletics

Cal State Stanislaus named Hung Tsai assistant director of athletics for communications and sports information. Tsai previously served as assistant commissioner for media relations at the California Collegiate Athletic Association … Paul Phillips was promoted to assistant director of athletics at Clark. Phillips also leads the swimming and diving programs at the university … St. Francis (New York) promoted Anthony Kurtin to assistant director of athletics for business affairs and administration. Kurtin had been head coach of the track and field team for the past five years … Florida promoted Kim Green to assistant athletics director for compliance. She had been director of compliance at the university’s athletic association … Dean Buchan moved to Georgia Tech to be the Yellowjackets assistant athletics director for media relations. He left the same position at Wake Forest … Texas-Pan American named Ricky Vaughn assistant athletics director for academic support and student services.

Coaches

Baseball — Calvin hired John Sparks as its head coach. Sparks replaces Jim Timmer, who stepped down to focus on his duties as athletics director … St. Andrews Presbyterian announced Keith Williams as head coach … Central Florida extended Jay Bergman’s contract through June 30, 2010 … Holy Cross hired Greg DiCenzo to be the program’s 18th head coach … Tennessee hired Todd Raleigh as head baseball coach. Raleigh spent the past eight seasons at the helm of the Western Carolina program and was twice named Southern Conference Coach of the Year.

Baseball assistants— Bradley LeCroy was added to the Tennessee staff. LeCroy coached the past two seasons at Western Carolina … Arkansas Tech named Chris Curry and Will McCrotty as assistant coaches … Bill Mosiello was added to the Auburn staff. Mosiello served as hitting coach at Southern California last season … Central Florida promoted Craig Cozart to associate head coach. Cozart recently completed his 15th year with the program.


Men’s basketball — Nevada’s Mark Fox received a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Reno through 2014 … Felician promoted Del Harrison to a full-time position. Harrison, who has been at the helm for two seasons, will also occupy the position of game-day operations/recruiting coordinator … Kean hired Rob Kurzinsky to lead its men’s basketball program. A former assistant at St. Peter’s, Kurzinsky has also worked as director of basketball operations at Columbia. He inherits a program that was 13-12 last season … Cliff Ellis was hired to take over at Coastal Carolina. Ellis, who also coached at Auburn and Clemson, signed a five-year contract. He succeeds Buzz Peterson … Marvin Menzies will coach at New Mexico State.


Men’s basketball assistants — Loyola (Illinois) added Lance Randall to its staff … Randolph-Macon added J.D. Byers to its staff … Winthrop selected Marty McGillan … UC Riverside added Chris Brazelton to its staff. Brazelton spent last season as a graduate assistant at New Orleans. The program also named Dennis Cutts as an assistant and selected John Smallwood as director of basketball operations … DePauw hired Carson Harris.


Women’s basketball — After two seasons as co-head coach at Amherst, Lynn Hersey will move across the Connecticut River to become head coach at Smith … Kristin Cole was selected as head coach at New Hampshire. She was an assistant at Xavier for the last five seasons … Roger Williams tabbed Tracey Hathaway-James as its head women’s basketball coach. Hathaway-James, who played at Rhode Island, had been an assistant at Clark … Former Radford assistant Corey Thomaston was named head coach at LeTourneau.

Women’s basketball assistants — Texas A&M promoted Kelly Bond to associate head coach and hired Johnnie Harris as an assistant. Harris replaces Amy TennisonSharon Brodard was added to the Clark (Massachusetts) staff … Kelly Hall Barsky will assume the designation of senior woman administrator at St. Francis (New York) … Norfolk State hired Malikah Willis and Lamont Walker … Mercer chose Todd Eilert.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Stanley Watson was named head women’s cross country coach at Yeshiva. During his 20 years at the institution, Watson has served as head men’s cross country coach, head men’s golf coach, assistant men’s soccer coach and assistant director of athletics … Wisconsin-Eau Claire named Dan Schwamberger to coach the men’s and women’s programs. He also will serve as assistant men’s and women’s track coach.

Field hockey — DePauw named former Washington and Jefferson assistant Gina Preston as its head coach.

Field hockey assistant — Josselyn Mroz was selected as an assistant at Bryant.

Football — Steve Loney was named interim coach at Drake.

Football assistants — Central Florida announced Tom Freeman will coach the offensive line.

Men’s and women’s golf — Chris Kosiba was chosen to lead the newly formed New York University women’s golf program, which will begin intercollegiate competition in the fall. Kosiba will also lead the men’s team and will continue to serve an assistant women’s basketball coach at the school … Cortland State hired Mike Discenza to lead its women’s program. Discenza had been interim coach this spring in place of Dick Costello … Barb Odale resigned her post as women’s coach at Texas-Pan American after eight seasons … Wellesley named Sherry Makerney head golf coach and assistant professor of physical education. Makerney is a Northern Colorado graduate and former teaching professional at several different golf clubs, including the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida … Wartburg promoted Monica Severson to head women’s coach.

Men’s and women’s golf — Andrea Schiltz will join the Wartburg staff as an assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Joe Spallina will take over the women’s program at his alma mater, Adelphi.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants — Adelphi tabbed Anthony Saccone and Lindsay Goldman as assistants.

Rowing — Clemson selected Richard Ruggieri.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant — James Madison added Jonathan Williamson to its coaching staff.

Softball — Kentucky coach Eileen Schmidt has resigned after three seasons with the program to take the same position at Virginia, her alma mater. She replaces Karen Johns, who resigned in May … Holly Bruder was named head coach at Morehead State. She takes over the program after spending six seasons at Denison … Howard Dobson was named head coach of the Southern Mississippi program. Dobson had been an assistant at Oklahoma for the past five seasons. He replaces Gay McNutt, who resigned after seven seasons … Kim Zarling was hired at Beloit. She spent the last 12 seasons as head coach at South Dakota.

Softball assistant — Arkansas Tech hired Ray Loeser as an assistant. He replaces Beth Rambo.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Wisconsin-Eau Claire named Jerry Kollross head coach of the men’s and women’s programs.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistant — Keegan Walkley was added to the TCU staff after spending the past two seasons as an assistant at New Orleans.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Ed Tanner will lead both programs at Adelphi … Former Lakeland coach Ben Oestreich has taken over the Wartburg programs. He will also serve as equipment manager … Horace Choy will assume coaching duties of the New York University men’s program. He has spent the last 14 seasons as head coach of the women’s team … UNC Asheville hired Lise Gregory to lead the tennis programs. The former Florida State coach replaces Larry Hubbard … Mark Riley accepted the Kalamazoo head men’s tennis coaching job.

Men’s and women’s track and field — Kyle Brown will take over the St. Francis (New York) program after serving as an assistant. He will also become the coordinator of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and intramural director at the school.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Roxanne Prendergast has been named head women’s coach at Yeshiva … After one season as an assistant, Danielle MacKnight was named head coach at Adelphi … Cal State Monterey Bay named Jody Garry interim head coach … Sarah Haney was selected as coach of the women’s program at Maine-Farmington … Kim Wudi will replace Lisa Herb as head coach of the Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s team. She had been an assistant for the last two seasons.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants — San Jose State named former Stanford setter Katie Goldhahn as an assistant. Goldhahn graduated from Stanford in 2006 with a degree in sociology … William Corrao was added to the Adelphi staff.

Staff

Athletic trainer — Maine-Farmington hired Karin Krzal as an athletic trainer … Sue Walsh was named director of sports medicine at DePaul.

Assistant athletic trainer — Florida Southern named Brian Simerville to its staff.

Business — DePaul hired Eli Cutler as assistant director of corporate sales.

Compliance — Delaware tabbed Kerri Cebula as athletics manager of compliance.

Development — Scarlett Schmidt has been named director of development for athletics at Delaware. Schmidt previously worked at Virginia Tech and Ohio State.


Sports information — Geoff Goyne was selected as director of news and sports information at Wesley. Goyne spent the past two years as assistant sports information director at Mercyhurst … Stephen F. Austin tabbed Ben Rikard as assistant director of media relations … David Pape accepted a position with Carleton. He had been manager of publications and assistant to the director of public relations for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He replaces Eric Sieger, who was promoted to be the institution’s director of media and public relations in April … Army added Brian Gunning to its athletics communications staff. He will serve as associate director of athletics communications … Roy Pickerill has been selected as president of the Division II Sports Information Directors Association for the second straight year. Pickerill is entering his 20th year at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Sports information assistants — Philadelphia U. tabbed Matt Connors as assistant director of sports information and coordinator of special events … Iowa hired Aaron Blau to replace Tony Wirt, who resigned June 22.

Strength and conditioning — Tim Bilbrey joined the staff at Eastern Michigan as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Strength and conditioning assistant — John Field has been named assistant strength and conditioning coach at Colgate. Field earned a master’s of education in applied exercise science from Springfield this spring.

Ticket operations — Jay Finnerty was named director of ticket sales and operations at DePaul.

Conferences

Dan Beebe was appointed interim commissioner of the Big 12. Beebe joined the Big 12 in 2003 as senior associate commissioner and chief operating officer. He replaces Kevin Weiberg Bernadette Macca has been named associate commissioner of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Macca spent the past two seasons at Utica, where she was the head coach of the women’s lacrosse program and was responsible for women’s sports contracts and scheduling … The Big South promoted Chad Cook to director of marketing and hired Anthony Rizzo as a marketing assistant. Lauren Cooper, who worked as the conference’s coordinator of creative services, resigned her post. Beth Waggoner was hired as a compliance/administration intern … The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference hired Ben Brownlee to be administrative assistant for compliance … The Southeastern Conference tabbed Ayanna Wakefield as assistant media relations director. Wakefield joins the conference office after more than five years at South Carolina.

Deaths

Starkey Duncan Jr. died in May. A professor of psychology at Chicago, Duncan served as the school’s faculty athletics representative … Former Army football tackle Robin Olds died last week at the age of 84 … Former North Carolina State football player and coach Ernie Driscoll died at 75 … Former Virginia Tech and Davidson basketball coach Bobby Hussey died June 26 at the age of 67. Hussey won 310 games during his career … Wittenberg women’s basketball coach and associate athletics director Pam Smith died at the age of 47 after a long battle with cancer. A seven-time North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Smith compiled a 401-170 record during her 21-year career. Smith graduated from Wittenberg in 1982, after earning second-team all-America honors during her senior year … Pittsburg State football student-athlete Sean Kyle died June 19.
