Chancellors and presidents


Gloria Larson was named president of Bentley … Edinboro hired Jeremy Brown as president … Salem State selected Patricia Maguire Meservey as president. She previously served as provost and academic vice president at Suffolk … Thomas Rakes was promoted from provost to president at Tennessee-Martin.

Faculty athletics representative

Jim Crawley will assume duties as faculty athletics representative at Dominican (New York).

Directors of athletics

Rick Costello was named director of athletics at Delaware State. Costello spent the last four years as associate athletics director at South Florida … Ramapo tabbed Michael Ricciardi as its director of athletics. He had served as acting athletics director since August 2005 … Texas A&M-Commerce named Carlton Cooper as its director of athletics. Cooper had spent the past nine years working at Southern Methodist. A former basketball standout at Texas, Cooper played professionally overseas … Heidelberg head men’s basketball coach Duane Sheldon was appointed as interim director of athletics. Sheldon, who has been in charge of the men’s basketball program for five seasons, takes over for Jerry McDonald.

Associate directors of athletics

Kathleen Finnegan was named associate director of athletics at Ram­apo. She was also designated as the department’s senior woman administrator … Michael Spinner was chosen as associate director of athletics and sports information director at Yeshiva. For the past five years, Spinner has been head women’s lacrosse coach at Mount St. Vincent, where he also served as assistant athletics director and sports information director for the past three years.

Assistant directors of athletics

Pam Stackhouse, former assistant wo­men’s basketball coach at Kentucky, was promoted to assistant athletics director for women’s basketball at the school … Syracuse running backs coach Desmond Robinson was named assistant athletics director for football operations … Lasell tabbed Aaron Galletta as an assistant athletics director … Devlyn Lovell has resigned his post as assistant athletics director and head track and field coach at Massachusetts-Dartmouth … Bradley promoted Rob Bogardus to assistant athletics director for ticket operations.

Coaches

Baseball — Patrick Dolan was chosen to lead the St. Cloud State baseball program. Dolan replaces Denny Lorsung, who had served as head coach since 1979 … James Dolan was named the first head baseball coach at Lasell … McNeese State tabbed Terry Burrows to lead the program. Burrows, who played professionally with Texas, Milwaukee and San Diego, played his college ball for the Cowboys. He replaces Chad Clement, who resigned five games into the 2007 season … Henry Thomas was selected as head coach at Florida International. He replaces Danny Price, who was released after 28 seasons … Florida hired Kevin O’Sullivan, who spent the past nine seasons as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Clemson.

Men’s basketball — Coastal Caro­lina coach Buzz Peterson resigned to become director of player personnel for the Charlotte Bobcats … Kirk Earlywine is the new head coach at Eastern Washington. A former assistant at Weber State, Earlywine replaces Mike BurnsReggie Theus was named head coach of the Sacramento Kings, ending his two-year stint with New Mexico State. During his tenure in Las Cruces, Theus led the Aggies to consecutive winning seasons. The former UNLV standout played for the Kings during his NBA career … Mercy named assistant women’s basketball coach Tony Staffiere as head men’s basketball coach. He replaces Steve Kelly, who stepped down after 11 years in charge of the program.

Men’s basketball assistants — Catholic added Justin Kamm to its staff. Kamm most recently worked as a graduate assistant at Miami (Ohio) … Dan Dakich will return to Indiana, his alma mater, as director of basketball operations … UC Riverside named Dennis Cutts as an assistant coach and chose John Smallwood as director of basketball operations … Ulric Maligi and Doug Karleskint were added as assistants at Stephen F. Austin.

Women’s basketball — Margaret McKeon was selected as head coach at New Jersey Institute. She coached Boston U. from 1999-2004, compiling a 70-77 record during her tenure. She replaces Kim Bowen-LuskCharity Elliot resigned her post at Portland State to take the same position at UC San Diego … Kristen Patterson was named head women’s basketball coach at American International. Patterson has been an assistant with the Yellow Jackets for the past four seasons after graduating from the school in 2002. She replaces Peter Cinella, who resigned to become head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson … Lynn Plett resigned his post as Lewis coach after five seasons at the helm. Plett has accepted the same position at Missouri Western State … Anneke Chewning was tabbed as an assistant coach at Gannon. Chewning, who has been an assistant at Penn State-Behrend for the past two seasons, succeeds Briana FieldsBarb Bausch was appointed as the 12th head coach in the history of the program at St. Mary’s (Maryland).

Women’s basketball assistants — Kentucky added Wendy Palmer to its staff. An 11-year WNBA veteran, Palmer spent the past two off-seasons as an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth … Madeline Rich­ards was added as a graduate assistant at Lenoir-Rhyne … Former Central Florida women’s basketball coach Gail Striegler was hired as an assistant coach at Georgia State. Striegler spent eight seasons at the helm of the Central Florida program, compiling a 106-128 record during her tenure. She was twice named Atlantic Sun Conference coach of the year … Texas-Pan American promoted LaQueisha Dickerson to assistant coach. Dickerson has spent the past year as the Lady Broncs’ director of basketball operations and formerly was an assistant coach at Northern Oklahoma College … Meredith Doyle was chosen as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Rick Moody will take over the cross country and track and field programs at Florida Southern. He succeeds longtime coach A.L. “Buck” Dawson, who retired after the spring season … Michael Jackson will assume full-time duties as director of running sports/head coach at Ramapo.

Men’s and women’s fencing — New Jersey Institute named Yefim Litvan head coach. Litvan spent the past 13 seasons at the helm of the Rutgers program. He succeeds James Mlynek.

Football — Mike Santiago was named head coach at Incarnate Word, which will play its first game in 2009. Santiago spent six years as head coach at Stephen F. Austin … Massachusetts-Dartmouth tabbed Mark Robichaud to lead its team. Robichaud has worked as an assistant coach at five collegiate programs.

Football assistants — Catholic added Brian Zyglocke as defensive coordinator. He replaces Art Link … Oklahoma State hired Curtis Luper as assistant head coach for player development for football … Kentucky added Dontae Wright to its staff as a graduate assistant. He will work with the team’s linebackers.

Men’s and women’s golf — Ken­tucky graduate Myra Blackwelder has been named women’s golf coach at her alma mater. She replaces Stephanie Barker … Dan Wesley was named head coach at Rochester. A 1996 graduate of the school, Wesley has served as an assistant at his alma mater since January 2006. He succeeds Rich Johnson, who resigned after 10 seasons at the helm … Wayne Mackey was named head men’s coach at Dominican (New York). He succeeds Joe Clinton, who stepped down after one season.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics assistant — Chuck Dickerson was added to the Kentucky staff.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey — Cortland State named Joe Baldarotta head men’s coach. Baldarotta spent 16 years as head coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, compiling 265 wins during his tenure. He replaces Tom CranfieldEarl Utter has been hired as women’s coach at Cortland State. Utter, who had been head men’s coach at Morrisville State for the past 10 years, replaces Jen Kroleski.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistant — Saint Michael’s hired Brian Bova as the top assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Clarkson selected Caitlin Powderly as its new women’s coach … Stewart Moan was named head men’s coach and director of athletics facilities at Susquehanna. Moan spent the last six seasons as head coach at Oneonta State … Randolph tabbed Scott Ketcham to lead the college’s newly formed men’s program. Ketcham was an all-American during his playing days at Hampden-Sydney.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Post named John Benitez head women’s coach. He spent the past 10 seasons as an assistant at Western Connecticut State. Benitez replaces Matt Micros … Patrick Snyder was named the head men’s coach at Felician … Sweet Briar promoted assistant Kevin Fabulich to head coach. Fabulich replaces Paul Shaw, who resigned in April … California (Pennsylvania) named Al Alvine as the head coach of its women’s team. Alvine spent the past two seasons at the helm of the Saint Anselm program, leading the Hawks to consecutive 10-win seasons. Alvine succeeds Nicole Bartkus … Barton named Matt Akins as its new head men’s coach. Akins spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Lincoln Memorial, where he helped lead the program to a 30-5-4 record and a berth in last fall’s national semifinals. The former LeMoyne midfielder succeeds Gary Hall, who retired last month after 18 years … Ron Shewcraft has announced his retirement from Massachusetts Liberal Arts. Shewcraft spent 29 seasons leading the men’s program, compiling a record of 292-184-46 … Diego Bocanegra was named interim women’s coach at Cal State Bernardino. He replaces Noah Kooiman, who will remain as men’s coach … Joseph Okoh resigned as head coach at Shepherd to accept the same position at Howard. Okoh, the 2005 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coach of the year, was Shepherd’s all-time winningest coach with a record of 65-57-14 in seven years.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants — Colgate added Devin Rensing to its men’s staff. Rensing served as an assistant at Central Arkansas last season … San Francisco selected Maite Zabala as a women’s assistant. She spent the last three years on the California staff.

Softball — Jennifer Steele was named head coach at Randolph. Steele graduated from Longwood in 2005 after an all-American career on the diamond.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Bates selected Peter Casares as head coach.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistant — San Jose State added former standout Ashley Vrieze to its staff.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Central Florida tabbed Stephanie Nickitas as head women’s coach. An all-American during her playing days at Florida, Nickitas spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Duke.

Men’s and women’s track and field — Mike Holloway was named head women’s coach at Florida. Holloway will retain his duties as coach of the men’s program … Steve Patrick is the new coach of the Cortland State programs. He replaces Matthew Moran, who served as interim coach last season … New Mexico State hired Orin Richburg to oversee the cross country and track and field programs … UC Riverside elevated Nathan Browne to full-time assistant track and field and cross country coach. He succeeds Rickey Etheridge.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistants — Boo Schexnayder has resigned his post as jumps and multi-events coach at LSU … John Wallin was promoted to associate head coach at Adams State.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Denison tabbed Lynsey Pyle as head volleyball coach. Pyle replaces Sara Lee, who spent 18 seasons at the program’s helm.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant — Kara Hellmann was named an assistant at Niagara.

Staff

Academic services — Tulsa selected Rob Taylor as academic coordinator for football. Taylor spent the past three years at Arkansas.

Administrative — Notre Dame (Maryland) hired Lisa Tummillo as its athletics administration intern for the next two years … Hilbert tabbed Adam Waite as assistant for athletics administration.

Athletic trainer — Al Green was named head athletic trainer at Florida Southern. Green previously held positions at Kentucky and Michigan. He replaces Mike Knaisch.

Marketing — Colorado College selected Matthieu Gaudry as athletics marketing manager … Bradley promoted Mary Lou Janssen to associate director of marketing. Janssen has been a member of the Bradley athletics department since 1997.


Sports information — TCU hired Matt Hoover as its coordinator of athletics media relations. Hoover previously served as a graduate assistant at South Dakota State … Duquesne hired Ryan Gavatorta as assistant director of media relations … Utah hired Brooke Frederickson as a sports information assistant. Frederickson, who most recently has been a media relations assistant at Indiana, will be responsible for women’s volleyball and softball. In addition, associate sports information director Mike Lageschulte was named as the department’s director of publications and broadcasting and will serve as the radio play-by-play voice for football and men’s basketball. Utah also elevated Andy Seeley to associate sports information director and assistant sports information director Scott Pettett accepted responsibilities as the secondary football contact and primary contact for women’s basketball and baseball.


Strength and conditioning — Longwood tabbed Lisa Martin as the school’s first director of strength and conditioning.

Ticket operations — Temeka Samuels was named assistant director of ticket operations at Bradley.

Conferences

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference extended the contract of Commissioner Richard Ensor through June 2010 … The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference  announced that Darren Miller has been named director of information/assistant to the commissioner … Joel Cookson was named assistant commissioner of the Landmark Conference … Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg resigned his post. Weiberg has led the conference since 1998, helping to double the annual revenue distributed to member schools during his tenure … The Patriot League hired Matthew Dougherty as media relations director … The Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League hired Paul Stewart as men’s league supervisor of officials. Stewart spent 17 years as an on-ice referee in the National Hockey League … The Missouri Valley Conference named the following as 2007-08 athletics officers: Lloyd Benjamin, Indiana State, chair of the Presidents Council; Joe Sanders, Indiana State, president of the conference; Jim Schaus, Wichita State, conference vice president and chair of the athletics administrators; and Sharon Hanson, Creighton, conference vice president … GCSU President Dorothy Leland was selected as president of the Peach Belt Conference. In addition, Thomas Jones of Armstrong Atlantic, immediate past president; David Potter of North Georgia, president-elect; and Allen Meadors of North Carolina-Pembroke, league vice president, also were named to the conference’s executive committee.

Notables

Vanderbilt pitcher David Price won the Dick Howser Trophy as the top player in college baseball … Former New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner Carmine Calzonetti has been named president of Tuesday’s Children, a non-profit organization that provides support to families affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 … The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named the following as the 2007 Division I national assistant coaches of the year: Men’s sprints/hurdles — Ken Harnden, Florida State; men’s distances — Jerry Schumacher, Wisconsin; men’s throws — Brian Blutreich, North Carolina; men’s jumps/combined events — Jake Jacoby, Louisville. Women’s sprints/hurdles — Lawrence Johnson, Virginia Tech; women’s distances — Mike McGuire, Michigan; women’s jumps/combined events — Boo Schnexayder, LSU; women’s throws — David Dumble, Arizona State.

Deaths

Former Tennessee men’s basketball coach Ray Mears died June 11. During his 15-year tenure in Knoxville, Mears compiled a 278-112 record and is currently the all-time wins leader at the university. Mears was 80 … Former Oklahoma State and TCU basketball coach Jim Killingsworth died June 10. He was 83 … Former Pittsburg State basketball coach Bob Johnson died June 9 after a battle with cancer. Johnson won 157 games during his career and went on to serve as men’s golf coach at the school from 1977-1984. Johnson was 80 … Former Tennessee football player David Emory died June 13 in Knoxville. He was 71 … Indiana football coach Terry Hoeppner died June 19 after a long battle with brain cancer.  He was 59. Hoeppner spent 19 seasons as an assistant and head coach at Miami (Ohio) before coming to Indiana in 2004 … Former Idaho football standout Jim Norton died June 12 at the age of 68.
