Presidents and chancellors

Kim Bottomly is the new president at Wellesley … John M. Dunn was chosen as president of Western Michigan … Bentley selected Gloria Cordes Larson as its president.

Directors of athletics

Brian S. Mand was named director of athletics at St. Andrews Presbyterian to replace Howard Reichner … College of New Jersey announced John Castaldo as interim athletics director, effective June 1, to replace Kevin McHugh, who resigned to become athletics director at Bates … Bob Chichester resigned from UC Irvine, effective in August … Cal State San Bernardino Athletics Director Nancy Simpson resigned. She will be replaced on an interim basis by longtime professor Dwight Sweeney Jerry Baker resigned from his position at the College of Charleston … Anderson (South Carolina) hired Nancy Simpson.

Associate directors of athletics

David Icenhower Sr., head wrestling coach and assistant athletics director at College of New Jersey, was promoted to interim senior associate director of athletics and will retain head coaching responsibilities … Sam Houston State hired Greg HinzeMichael Belfiore is the new associate athletics director for recreation, fitness and intramurals at Hunter … Butler hired Tom Crowley as associate athletics director for internal operations. Crowley had been an assistant athletics director at Temple … Mount Holyoke named Lori Hendricks associate athletics director.

Assistant directors of athletics

Wisconsin-Whitewater named Amy Edmonds assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator … Sam Houston State chose Bobby Jordan as assistant athletics director for development … Delaware State tabbed Charles “Chuck” Shelton as assistant athletics director for football operations.

Coaches

Baseball — Greg Burnett was elevated to head coach at Texas Lutheran to succeed the retired Bill Miller … St. Cloud State picked Patrick Dolan to replace Denny Lorsung, who had been head coach since 1979 … Chris Campbell was named head coach at Transylvania, where he had served the past season as interim head coach … Tennessee released Rod Delmonico.

Men’s basketball — Eastern Washington announced that Mike Burns will not return next season … Bradley hired Steve Merfeld … Western Carolina extended Larry Hunter’s contract by two years.

Men’s basketball assistants — South Alabama selected Michael Floyd … Army tabbed Adam Bohac … Georgetown added Kenya Hunter and David Cox … Florida hired Rob Lanier Zac Roman joined the program at Southeast Missouri State … Louisiana Tech hired NBA legend and Bulldog alumnus Karl Malone as director of basketball promotion and assistant strength coach … Arizona State promoted Scott PeraRod Judson accepted a position at Illinois State … Ohio State selected Archie Miller.

Women’s basketball — Western State hired Latricia Trammell as head coach … Carrie Crawford resigned after four seasons as head women’s basketball coach and assistant softball coach at Wentworth Institute … Saint Anselm chose Chris Leazier as head coach … Missouri-St. Louis tabbed Lisa Curliss-Taylor as head coach … Michelle Walsh succeeds Amy Proctor as head coach at Lawrence. Proctor resigned in April after 19 seasons … Betsy Blose agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2011 as head coach at UNC Asheville … Cindy Blodgett resigned her position at Brown to become the head coach at Maine … Indianapolis hired LeAnn Freeland … Westminster hired Tracey K. Braden, former Central Missouri standout … Mount St. Mary’s Vanessa Blair left her position at the school … Kellie Harper signed a three-year contract extension at Western Carolina … Longwood selected Kristin Caruso … Vermont extended Sharon Dawley’s contract by four years, through the 2010-11 season … Dubuque announced Mark Noll as its new women’s basketball coach. He takes over for Todd Huffman, who resigned in April.


Women’s basketball assistants – Michigan State hired Evelyn Thompson … DePaul selected Bart BrooksKelley Deyo resigned at Liberty … Drexel tabbed Melissa DunneAndrea Bloodworth accepted a position at Liberty … Seton Hall added Brian Stanchak to its staff … Washington named Wingate Smith director of women’s basketball operations … Duquesne coach Suzie McConnell-Serio added Blaine Patterson and Tasha Butts to her staff … Shanice Stephens joined the staff at Clemson … Siena hired Michelle CollinsDave Dagostino accepted a position at West Virginia … Loyola (Illinois) tabbed Catherine DiGiacinto and Eric Simpson … Texas-Pan American promoted LaQueisha Dickerson to assistant coach. She had been director of basketball operations.


Bowling — Jon Koltz resigned from Wisconsin-Whitewater … Delaware State appointed Kimberly Terrell.


Men’s and women’s cross country — Longtime Western State head cross country coach and track and field assistant coach Duane Vandenbusche announced plans to retire at the end of the outdoor track and field season. Jen Michel, current cross country and track assistant coach, was named as Vanderbusche’s successor … Ron Tabb, head coach of the Pacific cross country and track and field programs, resigned. Associate track and field coach Grier Gatlin will take over the cross country team. Assistant track coach Tim Boyce will be the new head coach … Smith Gilbert will coach cross country and women’s track and field at Central Florida.


Field hockey — Smith appointed Jaime L. Ginsberg to replace Judy Strong.


Football assistants — East Carolina chose Vernon Hargreaves to coach defensive ends and special teams … Oklahoma State promoted Curtis Luper to assistant head coach for player development … Carroll (Wisconsin) hired Adam Laffey to coach wide receivers and Jeff Kluever to coach defensive ends.

Men’s and women’s golf assistants – Tulsa tabbed Sara Mobley for its women’s program.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey — Ann Ninnemann was elevated to full-time head women’s ice hockey coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. As interim head coach during the 2006-07 season, Ninnemann guided the Pointers to their second straight NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship appearance and a third-place finish in the tournament … Wisconsin-Stevens Point hired Wil Nichol as head men’s coach … Maine named Blake James head coach of the women’s program. He most recently served as an assistant at Minnesota State.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Rowan promoted Lindsay Hanson to head women’s coach to succeed Mary Marino, who retired after 20 seasons.


Men’s and women’s soccer — Gordon hired former Wheaton (Ill.) assistant Jake DeClute to coach the men’s team … Alfred Alvine will be the new head coach of the California (Pennsylvania) women’s program. Alvine replaces Nicole Bartkus, who resigned after five seasons.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant — Ashley Willitch was selected as a graduate assistant coach with the women’s team at Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Softball assistant — Army tabbed Michelle DePolo.


Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Bates hired Peter Casares to coach both men and women and serve as aquatics director … Dave Holland resigned after six years at Randolph-Macon College.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Former Illinois Wesleyan student-athlete Krista Cardona will coach the women’s team at her alma mater … Brian Jackson was named the new men’s tennis coach at Pacific (Oregon). A former Division I player at North Carolina-Wilmington and current exercise science professor at Pacific (Oregon), Jackson replaces Jeff Thompson … Jan Brogan retired after 29 seasons at California.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Mickey Cahoon was selected as head women’s volleyball coach and head men’s tennis coach at Clark (Massachusetts). He replaces Jim Hayes as head men’s tennis coach. Hayes will continue to direct the women’s team ... Felician named Alan Clements as head women’s coach … Sara Christie will coach the men and the women at Mount Olive.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant — Texas-Pan American named Talia Ogle assistant coach of the Lady Broncs.

Wrestling — Purdue hired Scott Hinkel.

Wrestling assistants — Wisconsin-Whitewater hired Matt Zwaschka Tom Erikson was added to Purdue’s staff.

Staff

Administrative — Mollie Zirbel will be Wisconsin-Whitewater’s administrative intern.
Athletic trainer — Caldwell selected Eric Armstrong.

Strength and conditioning — Scott Holsopple was hired as assistant director of strength and conditioning at Florida. Holsopple spent the 2006-07 season at Kentucky, where he worked with the men’s basketball team.

Sports information — Joseph DeBenedictis, former sports information director at Maritime, moved to Hunter … Sam Houston State named Jason Barfield as media services coordinator.

Conferences

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference appointed Jessica Huntley as an assistant commissioner. For the past year, Huntley has been a men’s basketball operations intern at Harvard … The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named William J. Wolper the conference’s first full-time commissioner. He had been director of information/assistant to the commissioner for the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He begins his duties August 1 … Lauren Venarchik, director of championships and special events at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, resigned … The Empire 8 promoted Timothy Farrell from sports information officer to assistant commissioner, effective July 1 … The American Southwest Conference announced its 2007-08 executive council members: Vic Morgan from Sul Ross State, president; Tom Cedel from Concordia-Austin, vice president; Bob Riley, East Texas Baptist, past president … Gregg M. Kaye was named commissioner of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, the first full-time commissioner for the 14-member league … Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner Jon A Steinbrecher received a one-year contract extension … The Ohio Valley Conference elected officers for next year: Kenneth Dobbins of Southeast Missouri State will be chair and Melvin Johnson of Tennessee State will be vice chair. The conference also promoted Ron English to senior associate commissioner for operations/chief operating officer … The Big South Conference elected President Anthony DiGiorgio of Winthrop president, VMI superintendent Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III vice president and Radford President Penelope Kyle secretary.

Notables

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Damon Martin of Adams State and Jerry Baltes of Grand Valley State as the 2007 Division II men’s and women’s coaches of the year for the outdoor track and field season. Other Division II national honors went to Abilene Christian’s Nicodemus Naimadu, men’s track athlete of the year; Kibwe Johnson of Ashland, men’s field athlete of the year; Mandy Zemba of Grand Valley State, women’s track athlete of the year; and Kwonya Ferguson of St. Augustine’s, women’s field athlete of the year … Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Brent Erickson and Willamette’s Matt McGuirk were chosen as 2007 NCAA Division III national men’s and women’s coaches of the year for the outdoor track and field season by U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Also receiving national recognition by the organization was Will Leer of Pomona-Pitzer as men’s track athlete of the year; Al Winsley of Mississippi College as men’s field athlete of the year; Marcia Taddy of Wisconsin-Platteville as women’s track athlete of the year; and Jillian Crandall of Wisconsin-River Falls as women’s field athlete of the year … Northwestern’s Kristen Kjellman and Duke’s Matt Danowski were named the Tewaaraton Trophy winners. The award is bestowed on the top collegiate lacrosse players in the nation … Monica Abott, a pitcher at Tennessee, received the USA Collegiate Softball Player of the Year award. For baseball, the player of the year award was split between Vanderbilt’s David Price and Florida State’s Tony Thomas.

Deaths

Former Villanova basketball star Howard Porter died May 26. He was 58 … New England Patriots player and former LSU standout Marquise Hill died after a jet ski accident May 27. He was 24 … Baylor President Emeritus Herbert H. Reynolds died unexpectedly May 25 … Schreiner baseball student-athlete Justin Smith died May 24 near his home. He was 23 … Former Texas Tech men’s basketball coach Gene Gibson died after complications from surgery. He was 82 … Dave Smalley, former men’s and women’s basketball coach at Navy, died June 1 of complications from lung cancer. He was 72.
