Chancellors and presidents

Virginia Hinshaw was named chancellor at Hawaii. She previously served as provost and executive vice chancellor at UC Davis … Dale Lunsford was selected as president of LeTourneau … Massachusetts-Lowell tabbed Martin Meehan as its chancellor. Meehan had been a United States representative from Massachusetts.

Directors of athletics

DePaul director of athletics Jean Lenti Ponsetto signed a five-year contract extension through 2012. Ponsetto is now in her fifth year as director of athletics and 32nd as a member of the Blue Demon family … Indiana signed Rick Greenspan to an extension through June 2013 … Doug Peters was named director of athletics at Minnesota State-Moorhead … Julie Soriero will become director of athletics, physical education and recreation at MIT, effective July 1. Currently, Soriero is director of athletics at Colorado College … Debbie Snell was tabbed at Texas A&M International. Previously, Snell served as associate athletics director for compliance and academics at Campbell … Kathleen Tierney was named director of athletics, physical education and wellness at Bryn Mawr, effective early August. She had been director of athletics at Lebanon Valley … Hamilton named Jon Hind director of athletics. Hind returns to his alma mater after working at Butler since 1991. Currently the associate director of athletics for operations at Butler, Hind first arrived at the university as the men’s lacrosse coach … Dixon Farmer will retire as athletics director at Occidental. Farmer, a 1963 graduate of the school, has held the post for the past seven years. A former NCAA hurdling champion and member of the Occidental Track and Field Hall of Fame, Farmer also served as head track and field and cross country coach at Michigan during the early part of his professional career … Northeastern director of athletics Dave O’Brien announced his resignation, effective in July. O’Brien has accepted a faculty appointment at Drexel, where he will become director of sports management … Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo inked a five-year contract extension … American selected Keith Gill as director of athletics. Gill most recently served as associate athletics director at Oklahoma and also worked as director of membership services at the NCAA national office from 2000-04.

Associate directors of athletics

Nona Richardson was named senior associate athletics director at UC Davis. She previously served as associate director of athletics at Ball State … Campbell named Stan Cole associate athletics director for media services, Tony Delp associate athletics director for advancement and Randy Magill associate athletics director for business.

Assistant directors of athletics

William Broussard was named assistant athletics director for development at his alma mater, Northwestern State. The school also selected Ryan Holloway as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions … Robert Harper was chosen as assistant athletics director for broadcasting at Campbell. The school also named Adam Prendergast as assistant director for media services … Georgia State hired Dena Freeman-Patton as assistant athletics director for student-athlete development.

Coaches

Baseball — Felician coach Chris Langan was promoted from part-time to full-time status. Langan is in his fourth season at the helm.

Men’s basketball — Chicago State released Kevin Jones … Rich Zvosec will not return to UMKC … Tommy Amaker will not return to Michigan … Illinois State hired Tim Jankovich as head coach. He replaces Porter MoserRicardo Patton will take over the program at Northern Illinois. He succeeds Rob Judson … Georgia State tabbed Rod Barnes as head coach. Barnes spent this season as an assistant at Oklahoma and spent eight years as head coach at Mississippi, his alma mater. He replaces Michael Perry … Long Beach State will not renew the contract of coach Larry Reynolds Brad Greenberg was hired at Radford … Wyoming selected Heath Schroyer as head coach … Steve Alford was named head coach at New Mexico … After serving as an assistant at Gonzaga for 16 years, Bill Grier was hired as head coach at San Diego. He replaces Brad Holland … Arkansas released head coach Stan Heath after five seasons. Heath led the Razorbacks to a 21-14 record this season. In six seasons as a head coach at the Division I level, Heath is 112-77 overall … Georgetown assistant Kevin Broadus was named head coach at Binghamton. He will replace Al Walker … North Dakota State promoted assistant Saul Phillips to head coach … Liberty hired former New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay. He succeeds Randy Dunton … Memphis extended the contract of head coach John Calipari through 2012 … Niagara inked Joe Mihalich to a multi-year contract … Dane Fife signed a contract extension that will keep him at Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne through 2013 … Jim Boylen is the new head coach at Utah. He had been the top assistant at Michigan State ... Colorado State hired Tim Miles … Xavier extended Sean Miller’s contract through the 2015-16 season.

Men’s basketball assistants — Former Kansas star Danny Manning will become an assistant coach at his alma mater. Manning has spent the past four seasons in Lawrence as team manager and director of student-athlete development … David Rachman was named associate head coach at North Dakota State … Gonzaga chose Ray Giacoletti as an assistant.

Women’s basketball — Cincinnati coach Laurie Pirtle announced her retirement … Central Michigan will not renew the contract of coach Eileen Kleinfelter … Duquesne coach Dan Durkin resigned after 14 seasons with the program … Washington will not renew the contract of head coach June Daugherty and her coaching staff … Tony DiCecco resigned his post at Northern Iowa after 12 seasons. DiCecco leaves the program with an overall record of 183-161 … Fairfield coach Dianne Nolan will resign after 28 seasons with the program … Francis Marion tabbed Heather Macy as its new women’s basketball coach. Macy replaces Valecia Tedder, who resigned after five seasons with the program … After 27 years with the Penn State program, Rene Portland has resigned her post. Portland compiled a 606-235 record during her 27-year tenure with the Nittany Lions … Michigan State revised the contract of Joanne McCallie … Arkansas tabbed Louisville’s Tom Collen to lead its program … Louisville selected Jeff Walz as head coach. He spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Maryland.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Southern New Hampshire added Jaime Gratton as men’s cross country coach. He succeeds Adrien Cooper, who resigned in February.

Field hockey — Siena named Bill Davidson head coach.

Football — Charles Coe resigned from his post at Alabama State.

Football assistants — Georgia Southern added Ron Dugans, Mitch Stewart and Bubba Walker to its coaching staff … Kansas State selected Greg Burns to lead the defensive backs … Buzz Preston was tabbed by New Mexico … Wayne State (Michigan) hired Terry Heffernan as offensive line coach. Heffernan spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant at Michigan … Gannon added Brad Rzyczycki, Randy Zimmerman and Mike Crawford to its staff. Shaun Curtiss and Nick Postma were promoted … Campbell added Lonnie Hansen to its staff. Hansen will serve as assistant head coach and will also lead the offensive line … Oregon State added Dave Ungerer to its staff … Wagner selected Andre Fonenette as an assistant coach. A former wide receiver at Syracuse, Fonenette will lead the Seahawk wide receivers … Massachusetts added Sean Spencer as defensive line/special teams coach … Western Carolina tabbed Doug Malone as offensive coordinator.


Men’s and women’s ice hockey — Lou DiMasi will not return to coach the St. Michael’s men’s program. DiMasi compiled 264 victories during his 25 years at the helm. Chris Davidson has been named interim head coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Tom Gosselin was named head women’s coach at Mount St. Mary’s … Oswego State hired Brian McGrane to lead its women’s program. McGrane served as head coach at Elmira last season … Mount Olive women’s soccer coach Chris Shaw stepped down to become an assistant at Fresno State. Before Shaw’s arrival, the program had never finished above .500 during its nine-year history.  Shaw compiled a record of 52-34 during his four-year tenure.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant — Belmont hired Bryan Johnson as an assistant men’s coach. He replaces Ben Fisher.

Men’s and women’s track and field — Matt Bingle will take over the women’s program at Minnesota.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Felician did not renew the contract of women’s coach Nichole Jones … Texas-Pan American hired Angela Hubbard as head women’s volleyball coach.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant — Albany hired Lynnette Moster as an assistant women’s coach.

Staff

Academic services — Georgia State tabbed Joanna Harris as a student-athlete development advisor/CHAMPS life skills coordinator.

Athletic trainer — Lake Erie named Barb Moore head athletic trainer.

Business — Travis Eisentrout was named athletics business manager at California (Pennsylvania).

Facilities — California (Pennsylvania) hired Ed Whited as director of athletics facilities and services.

Strength and conditioning — Dave Jenkerson was named strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Southern

Corrections

In the March 12 edition of the NCAA News, it was incorrectly stated that Long Beach State named Vic Cegles as senior associate director of athletics for external relations. Long Beach State tabbed Dave Benedict for that position.

Deaths

Former Iowa State baseball coach Buford “Duffy” Bass died March 14 at the age of 81. Bass, who owned a 713-457-18 career mark, coached the Iowa State program from 1964-88 and led the team to the 1969 national title … Former Grambling football standout Ernie Ladd died recently … Former Cincinnati football captain Elbie Nickel died. He was 84 … Lloyd Eaton, the winningest head coach in Wyoming football history, died March 14 … Fayetteville State assistant football coach Larry McClain died … North Carolina student Jason Ray died March 26 after being hit by a sport-utility vehicle. Ray served as the Tar Heels mascot for the past three seasons. He was on schedule to graduate in May … Longtime Florida track and field coach Tom Jones died March 21 after a battle with cancer … Jim McCullough, former commissioner of the Gulf South Conference and assistant commissioner in the Southeastern Conference, died earlier this month … Former West Virginia student-athlete Charlie Hockenberry died. He was 88 … Former Iowa football player Homer Harris died March 17 at the age of 90. Harris was the first black captain of a Big Ten football team … Former Oklahoma football star Leon Heath died March 23 … Ohio soccer student-athlete Sarah Merritt died after a fall in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She was 20.
