Presidents and chancellors
Assumption selected Francesco Cesareo as president. He had been a dean at Duquesne … Fred Ohles will be president of Nebraska Wesleyan … New Mexico named David Schmidly president. He had served in the same capacity at Oklahoma State since 2002 … Suzanne Shipley was named president at Shepherd. Shipley previously served as vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at Notre Dame (Maryland) … James Ammons was named president of Florida A&M. Previously, Ammons served as chancellor at North Carolina Central … Stephen Emerson will be the new president of Haverford College … Sister Anne Munley was selected as president of Marywood. She had been executive director of the African Sisters Education Collaborative at the university … John Neuhauser will assume the presidency at St. Michael’s, effective July 1. He currently serves as academic vice president and dean of faculties at Boston College.

Directors of athletics
Oregon hired Pat Kilkenny as director of athletics … Brian Mackin will lead the athletics program at UAB … LSU signed Skip Bertman to a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the program through 2008. Bertman has been the school’s athletics director since 2001 and spent 18 years as head baseball coach … Sonny Watkins announced his retirement from McNeese State, effective in June.

Associate directors of athletics
Long Beach State hired Vic Cegles to be associate athletics director for external relations … Sue Crosby-Tangen was promoted at Bridgewater State. She had been assistant athletics director for compliance and academic support and senior woman administrator at the institution.

Assistant directors of athletics
Wyoming hired Don Julian to lead its annual giving efforts … Arkansas moved Louis Campbell, defensive backs coach, to assistant athletics director … Tom Schott has been named assistant athletics director for communications at Purdue after serving in an interim capacity since August. Schott has been a member of the sports information staff since 1990 … Rice named Chris Stacy assistant athletics director for football operations.

Coaches
Baseball — McNeese State’s Chad Clement resigned. Chris Fackler will be interim coach … Newbury named Greg Sullivan as its first head baseball coach. Sullivan was a four-year player at Division III Eastern Connecticut State. The Nighthawks are set to begin their first varsity season this spring.

Baseball assistants — Air Force promoted Scott Marchand to pitching coach and hired Chandler Rose as assistant coach … New Jersey City added James Mondesir and Will Alvarez to its staff.

Men’s basketball — Slippery Rock extended Jamal Palmer’s contract by one year … Texas Lutheran coach Tom Oswald resigned … Daniel Webster promoted Jeremy Currier to head coach. Currier spent the past season as an assistant with the program. A 2004 graduate of Endicott, Currier replaces Eddie Quick Ben Jacobson signed a contract extension that will keep him at Northern Iowa through 2012 … Beloit men’s basketball and men’s golf coach Cecil Youngblood will resign his posts to take on new responsibilities at the college. Also an assistant athletics director with the program, Youngblood has accepted a position as director of the multicultural program and assistant dean of students. The appointment is effective immediately, but Youngblood will remain with the golf program through the end of the academic year.

Women’s basketball — Lamar’s Leonard Drake resigned due to health concerns. Assistant coach Janet Eaton will serve on an interim basis.

Men’s and women’s cross country — Niagara hired Trevor White to lead the Purple Eagles men’s and women’s cross country teams. White had coached cross country and both indoor and outdoor track at the high school level since 1995. White has also been involved in the administration of track and field at a state level. He was a student athlete at Geneseo State from 1991 to 1995, where he earned academic all-American honors.

Football — Minnesota-Morris named Todd Hickman as its head football coach. Hickman has worked as an assistant with the program since 1998, serving as coordinator for both the offense and defense. Hickman played at the school in the early 1980s and led the Cougars to the Division III playoffs in 1981. He replaces Ken Crandall, who resigned in December … Rutgers extended the contract of head coach Greg Schiano through 2016 … Austin Peay coach Carroll McCray resigned … Carey Bailey was named head football coach at Howard … Stonehill named Robert Talley as its new head football coach. Talley spent the last two seasons as a special assistant and assistant offensive line coach with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. He becomes the 16th black head football coach among the 616 NCAA football-playing institutions, not including Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Talley succeeds Chris Woods, who accepted an assistant post at Harvard … Jim Grobe signed a 10-year contract with Wake Forest that will keep him with the program through 2016. Grobe is 37-35 in six seasons with the Demon Deacons.

Football assistants — Tim Beckman was named defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State … Stanford tabbed Scott Shafer as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach … Scott Frost was added to the staff at Northern Iowa … South Carolina selected Shane Beamer as an assistant and promoted David Reaves to quarterbacks coach … Buffalo chose Danny Barrett as assistant head coach … Syracuse named Steve Russ as its defensive coordinator … Steve Walsh will join the coaching staff at Army … Bubba McDowell will lead the safeties at Houston … Western Kentucky selected Kevin Wright as offensive coordinator … Kansas State hired Donnie Duncan as a consultant for the football program … Simpson tabbed Joe Ashfield to lead the quarterbacks. Ashfield served as a graduate assistant at Stanford for the past two seasons. He replaces Clint Head … Kansas named Je’Ney Jackson cornerbacks coach and Tim Beck passing game coordinator … North Texas hired David Rausch to coach defensive ends … Alabama tabbed Curt Cignetti to coach wide receives and serve as recruiting coordinator, Major Applewhite as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Kevin Steele as defensive coordinator … Alabama also named Geoff Collins director of player personnel… East Carolina announced Todd Fitch as the new quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator … Temple hired Jared Backus to coach the defensive line and Kevin Gilbride to coach running backs … TCU named Justin Fuente assistant coach. He had been offensive coordinator at Illinois State … Elon named Brian Newberry as the team’s new defensive backs coach. Newberry spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Washington and Lee. He replaces Tony Trisciani, who left for a head post at a Pennsylvania high school … D.J. McCarthy was named wide receivers coach at LSU. He succeeds Todd Monken, who left for a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars … Baylor promoted Larry Hoefer to defensive coordinator. He replaces Bill BradleyBruce Read left his post at Oregon State for a position with the Dallas Cowboys. Read served as Oregon State’s special teams coordinator … Arkansas moved Alex Wood from quarterbacks to receivers coach. Chris Vaughn will become safeties coach. He had been director of on-campus recruiting … Grambling hired Jay Davis to coach quarterbacks and Sam Washington to coach defensive backs … Colorado tabbed Jeff Grimes as its offensive line coach … Georgetown added Frank Colaprete to its staff. The Hoyas also promoted Rob Sgarlata and Dassin Blackwell … Baylor hired Cornell Jackson to lead the running backs. Jackson previously held a similar post at New Mexico … Southern California tabbed John Morton as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator … Memphis hired Rick Kravitz as defensive coordinator … Utah promoted Jay Hill to special teams coordinator … Tony Dews was added to the West Virginia staff. Dews has made coaching stops at UNLV, Central Michigan and Holy Cross.

Men’s and women’s golf — New York University named Chris Kosiba acting men’s coach.

Men’s and women’s golf assistant — Florida State tabbed Katie Quinney for its women’s program.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants — Erica Morse was added to the women’s staff at Keene State … Misericordia added Christina Carfello to its women’s staff and Michael Brand to its men’s staff.

Men’s and women’s soccer — David Poggi was hired to coach the men’s program at Sewanee (University of the South). He replaces Qasim Sheikh, who resigned late last year … Scott Donnelly is the new men’s coach at Mars Hill.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant — Vermont tabbed Ross Duncan for the men’s program.

Softball assistant — Niagara added Jordan Stevens to its staff.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Central (Iowa) hired Bryan Mours as its head men’s and women’s coach. He replaces Doug Stursma, who resigned last fall.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistants — Keene State tabbed Wilson Perez and Breanne Lucey.

Men’s and women’s volleyball — Gary Patch was selected as head women’s coach at Assumption. He replaces Bob Stein, who resigned after three seasons with the Greyhounds … Missouri Western State announced Tiffany Mastin will be the school’s fifth head volleyball coach since the program began in 1975. Mastin spent the last two years as head coach at Oakland City and has experience at the high school level. She graduated from Taylor University in 1998. Mastin replaces Cindy Brauck, who retired in May 2006 … Simmons selected Jason Conetta to be the new head volleyball coach for the Sharks. Conetta was a part of the 2006 Rivier team that reached the 2006 Division III national semifinals. He will oversee all aspects of the program, including game and practice preparation as well as recruiting and fund-raising … San Jose State hired Oscar Crespo as women’s coach. Crespo spent the past seven years on the Nevada coaching staff … Norfolk State hired Jennifer Fry as head women’s volleyball coach. She replaces Allison Millette-Sparrow.

Water polo — Gannon tabbed Don Sherman as head men’s and women’s water polo coach. Sherman currently serves as the program’s associate director of athletics.

Staff

Athletic trainer — Western New England hired Jill Conselino as its athletic trainer. She previously served as head athletic trainer at Clark.

Marketing — Purdue selected Heather Hoesly as director of promotions. Hoesly previously worked as assistant director of sports marketing at Illinois.

Conferences
The East Coast Conference hired Laura Clayton as associate commissioner for operations … Greg Weghorst will be the American Southwest Conference’s new media relations director. He has served as interim director since August 2006.

Corrections
The February 26 edition of The NCAA News incorrectly stated changes at Tusculum involving Shap Boyd and Marc Kolb. Boyd was hired as to be defensive coordinator at Muskingum while Kolb was named offensive coordinator at Tusculum.

Deaths
Former Canisius basketball player and head coach Joe Niland died February 18. He was 89 … Legendary Baruch basketball scorer Burt Beagle died February 19 after a battle with cancer. Beagle had served as the program’s official scorer since 1966 and was also the school’s associate head baseball coach … Kenyon swimmer Caleb Gottinger died February 19 after an accidental fall February 17 … Barry Stevens, former Iowa State basketball standout, died February 21 in Gary, Indiana. He was 43 … Former Central Connecticut State sports information director Donald Clerkin died on February 23. He was 79 … Former Missouri football standout Damien Nash died after playing in a charity basketball tournament February 24. He was 24 … Former Purdue football player Lamar Lundy died earlier this month at the age of 71.
