Former San Jose State athletics director dies

Former San Jose State football player, coach and athletics director Bob Bronzan died December 10 at the age of 87.

Bronzan played at San Jose State from 1937-39 and was an honorable mention all-America selection during the team’s perfect 13-0 season in 1939. After a stint in the Air Force during World War II, Bronzan returned to San  Jose State as an assistant coach from 1946-49.

In 1950, Bronzan was appointed head coach at the school. After his seven-year tenure at the helm, he served as the university’s athletics director from 1960-71. He also worked as a professor in the human performance department from 1946-80.

Bronzan is one of five recipients of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics Merit Award. In 2005, NACDA honored him with the James J. Corbett Memorial Award.
