The NCAA News

The Double-A Zone offered extensive coverage of the 2007 NCAA Convention last week, generating discussion on Association-wide sessions, pending legislation and ancillary events.

NCAA President Myles Brand provided detail about his annual State of the Association address in his weekly podcast, Mondays With Myles. Brand discussed the need for fairness in intercollegiate athletics and his belief that sportsmanship, diversity in hiring and increased opportunities for women will protect that bedrock principle.

The Double-A Zone also had a chance to sit down and interview some of Convention’s most prominent guests. Early in the week, basketball legend Bill Russell discussed his commitment to education and his thoughts about how society can improve in that arena. On the same evening, University of California, Berkeley, Professor Emeritus Harry Edwards suggested we need to do a significantly better job of diversifying intercollegiate athletics.

Former University of Texas at Austin softball standout Cat Osterman shared her excitement about receiving the prestigious Top VIII award from the NCAA and discussed what it means to be a role model.  Arguably one of the greatest softball pitchers in college history, Osterman talked about her frustrations that softball has been removed from the 2012 Olympic slate.

In the Double-A Zone’s most exclusive interview to date, former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue was captured on video before receiving the Theodore Roosevelt Award, the NCAA’s highest honor. Tagliabue discussed the NFL’s success in hiring minority coaches and why college football programs are lagging behind. He also addressed the importance of sportsmanship in both intercollegiate and professional athletics as well as the escalating salaries of coaches.

With more than 30 posts made onsite, the Double-A Zone provided commentary about most of the major decisions and happenings at the annual NCAA Convention.
