Minority hiring

Martin Jarmond, director of annual giving

for intercollegiate athletics
Michigan State University
Athletics Administration

“I’d like to believe that you’ll see more emphasis on the processes used to identify, develop and retain more minorities in top spots of administration. I think you’ll see more initiatives directed toward the training and overall preparation of minorities that will lead to the applicant pool for these top spots becoming more inclusive. As far as outcomes are concerned, I don’t think that number will grow exponentially over the next 10 years, but I do think you’ll have more minorities who are prepared and ready for an opportunity to prove it.”

Floyd Keith, executive director

Black Coaches Association

“If presidents and athletics directors aren’t taking note of this (black coaches leading both teams in the Super Bowl), then we’ve got an even greater problem than we think we do. You look at the landscape of college football in comparison with where the NFL is...and you have to acknowledge they’re a football field ahead of the NCAA.”

Cyrus Mehri, counsel

Fritz Pollard Alliance
Florida Today

“We have tried to focus our attention on the pros, because that’s our mission. But we feel we’re going to eventually hit a wall on progress if something’s not done on the college level.

“That’s because the college level is the natural pipeline into the pros. Bobby Petrino — college coordinator, pro coordinator, college head coach, now pro head coach (in Atlanta). That’s the natural progression. Our guys don’t have those same kinds of opportunities on the college level because instead of being a pipeline, it’s just choked up dry.”

Louis Coleman, executive director
Justice Resource Center (Louisville, Kentucky)
Louisville Courier-Journal

“We want a firm commitment from the presidents of these universities that they need a (hiring) process that will be similar to the process they have in other (university) departments.

“We’re going to do as much as we can to take this as a far as we can to make sure that fairness is a part of these university processes in athletics departments.”

Eugene Marshall, board president

Black Coaches Association
Newsday

“What it really comes down to are schools’ (fund-raisers) and alumni. Will fund-raisers hire people (of color) to run these places where they spend their money? And in some cases, the answer is still no. We are seeing progress. It’s just been far slower (in college football).”

Performance-enhancing drugs

Kevin Ryan, United States Attorney
Northern District of California
USA Today

“People are better educated now about this issue, and whether you’re a sports fan or not, I think people generally have the opinion that steroids should not have a place in sports.”
