Williams interim head rowing coach Pat Tynan admitted that coming into the season, the squad wondered whether it could defend its national title.

The Ephs put those doubts to rest with a victory in the Varsity I Eights grand final to wrap up their second consecutive national championship at the 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships May 27 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Williams posted 18 points to beat runner-up Trinity (Connecticut) by two. Bates was third with 13 points. Puget Sound and Ithaca tied for fourth, but Puget Sound was awarded the higher place based on a better finish in the grand final. William Smith finished sixth with nine points.

“We were pretty unsure coming in to the season if our team could do it a second time, but we gained a lot of confidence through our training in the winter and as the season went on,” said Tynan. “We seemed to get in a pretty good groove while we were down here in Tennessee and felt like we were getting faster each time we were on the water. It’s just a special day for this team.”

Tynan credited a steady focus on each race throughout the season for the team’s success. “We definitely had a national championship in the back of our minds. It was a team goal to be competitive down here, but we just took it one week and one race at a time.”

Williams led from the beginning of the Eights grand final and withstood a late charge from Trinity at the 1,000-meter mark to cross the finished line ahead of the Bantams with a winning time of 6:49.59. The Ephs earned a critical 12 points toward the team competition with the victory. Bates (6:57.10) held off Puget Sound (6:57.17) to capture third by .07 seconds.

In the petite final, at-large entries Mary Washington and Coast Guard finished first and second, respectively, but were not eligible to earn team points. At the race’s midpoint, Trinity had a three-seat lead over Williams before the Ephs surged to a third-place finish with a time of 7:09.94. Williams earned six points to secure the title.
