The Generals of Washington and Lee captured their first team title in program history with a victory over Amherst at the 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships May 17 at Mary Washington.

Washington and Lee won the title match, 5-2.

Sophomore Katie Tabb and senior Ginny Wortham helped Washington and Lee jump to an early lead with a win at No. 2 doubles over Katie Hudson and Jill Wexler, 8-5. Then Leah Weston and Lauren Caire topped Jennifer Murphy and Laura Stein, 8-2, at the No. 3 position.

Kelly Will, playing No. 4 singles, defeated Amherst’s Murphy, 6-0, 6-2, and senior Emily Applegate beat Alicia Menezes, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to extend the Generals’ advantage. Tabb clinched the title for Washington and Lee with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, victory in the No. 3 slot.

Amherst freshman Brittany Berckes had a hand in both of the points the Jeffs’ posted in the championship match. After teaming with Menezes to defeat Applegate and Kristen McClung at No. 1 doubles, Berckes claimed a victory at No. 2 singles over Wortham.

Washington and Lee completed the season with a 25-1 record while Amherst finished 18-5.

Sewanne beat Williams, 5-3, in the third-place match.

DePauw’s Liz Bondi defeated defending champion Applegate to win the singles title during the individual portion of the championships.

With the match tied going into the third set, both players held serve and Bondi registered a 7-3 win in the tiebreak. It was Bondi’s second national championship this year. She also was a forward for the Tigers’ women’s basketball team, which won the Division III championship in March.

Meanwhile, in the doubles final, Amherst’s Menezes and Berckes outlasted Amy Roche and Claire Smyser of Middlebury.

In the first set, Menezes and Berckes transformed an early 4-1 advantage into a 6-2 win. Roche and Smyser, fresh off a three-set semifinal victory over Wheaton (Illinois), forced their second straight three-set match with 6-4 win in the second frame of the title match. The Middlebury tandem maintained the momentum through the early portion of the third set with a 2-0 lead. However, Berckes and Menezes stormed back to claim the final set, 6-4.
