Violets run hard, sit still for first cross country title

New York University waited anxiously after a competitive Division III Men’s Cross Country Championships race, watching the scoreboard for the final team scores.

The nerve-wracking 10-minute wait proved worth it, as the Violets won their first cross country team title November 17 at St. Olaf.

“We ran the best we could and I knew we had a chance, but I had no idea where we were in the final standings until our name went up on the screen,” said coach Nick McDonough, “Last year, we scored 92 points and came in second. This year we won with 128.”

It was the third-highest winning point total in Division III men’s cross country history and the highest total since 1991, but it also was 22 points better than runner-up Haverford.

No team was able to place five runners among the top 50 finishers individually, but the Violets were the only team to place their top five runners among the top 40 scorers. That provided the decisive edge, along with the fact that New York University’s third, fourth and fifth runners each managed to beat their counterparts from Haverford across the finish line.

The Violets also picked up an edge from their top finisher, Hany Abdullah, who placed sixth among scoring runners and ninth overall — six scoring places better than Haverford’s best finisher, Ian Ramsey-North.

Abdullah may have been the most nervous Violet of them all as the team waited for the final scores.
“I was disappointed when we finished,” he said. “I had hit a wall in the first mile and knew that individually I wasn’t going to win. But I knew I had to tough it out for the team. I just wasn’t sure we had done enough to win it.”

The entire squad fought its way through blustery cold on the 8,000-meter course. “It was a war,” McDonough said. “A real war.”

Cortland State finished third and top-ranked Calvin, winner of two of the three previous championships, finished fourth. Wisconsin-La Crosse rounded out the top five.

Tyler Sigl of Wisconsin-Platteville won the individual title, beating sophomore Peter Kosgei of Hamilton by 13 seconds. The senior slowly shed competitors as a pack of four leaders dwindled one-by-one, until Sigl pulled away approaching a hill in the home stretch.

“When the gun went off, I just went out and got after it,” said Sigl, a three-time Midwest region champion. “It’s easier to relax when I’m in control, and today I was in control.”
