UC Santa Cruz netted its sixth national Division III Men’s Tennis Championships team title with a 5-1 victory over defending champion Emory May 17 in St. Louis.

The top-ranked Banana Slugs, making their 11th appearance in the championship match, jumped to an early 2-0 lead with wins by Matt Seeberger and Max Ortiz at No. 1 doubles over Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka, and Jared Kamel and Mark Vartabedian at No. 3 doubles over Chris Jordan and Hardy Ehlers.

In singles play, Bryan Pybas defeated Oliver Lopp, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 3 position while Kamel overwhelmed Masuoka at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-1, to extend UC Santa Cruz’s lead to 4-1. Ortiz secured the national championship for the Banana Slugs with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Mark Boren at No. 5 singles.

UC Santa Cruz coach Bob Hansen called this year’s club special. “We played really well in doubles, and clamped down in singles,” he said. “Emory is an extremely talented team and we were competing hard for every single point.”

Emory’s Lopp and Michael Kaufman notched the Eagles’ only point of the match with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Pybas and Max Liberty-Point.

UC Santa Cruz finished the season 21-5. Emory (22-9) was making its second straight and fifth overall championship-match appearance.

In the third-place match, Middlebury defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 5-1.

UC Santa Cruz also swept the singles and doubles titles during the individual portion of the championships. The Banana Slugs’ Matt Seeberger claimed his third overall singles championship and his third straight doubles title.

Seeberger, who also earned the singles championship in 2004 and 2005, defeated freshman John Watts of Washington U. in St. Louis. In the first set, Seeberger surged to a 4-0 lead and then hung on, 6-4. He won the second set by the same score.

In doubles final, Seeberger and Ortiz needed three sets to get past Emory’s Goodwin and Masuoka. The latter posted a 7-6 victory in the first set. In the tiebreak, Seeberger and Ortiz held an early 3-0 lead before the Emory duo reeled off seven of the next nine points to claim the set. Seeberger and Ortiz recovered with a 6-4 victory in the second set and closed out the match and the championship with a 6-2 third-set win.
