The NCAA News

Not much has changed in the last 28 years at the Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Sure, the athletes have changed and most of the coaches are different, but the outcome is always the same — Kenyon finishes on top.

For the 28th consecutive year, the Kenyon men’s swimming and diving program brought home the hardwood from the national championships meet, this time easily finishing in front of second-place Denison. The Lords scored 570 points to Denison’s 351, while Emory and Williams finished third and fourth, respectively.

Senior Eric Dunn won three individual titles during the three-day meet. On March 15, Dunn won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 25.62 seconds, finishing just in front of Denison’s David Curtis (4:25.74). Dunn came back the next day to place first in 400-yard individual medley (3:57.41) and capped his impressive meet March 17 with a victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:24.81). Dunn was named swimmer of the meet for his efforts.

Kenyon senior Joseph Gosselar defended his national title in the 200-yard backstroke, winning this year with a time of 1:59.38. Gosselar also won the 100-yard backstroke March 16.

In one of the most competitive races of the meet, St. Olaf sophomore Nelson Westby edged Emory’s Scott Bobo in the 200-yard individual medley. Westby won by a nose, finishing .05 seconds in front of Bobo in 1:50.84. Westby also earned a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (49.27), while Bobo came in ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.68).

On the final day of the meet, Carnegie Mellon’s David Krzeminski won the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.54) and Grove City’s Caleb Courage defended his 100-yard freestyle crown (44.36). Denison’s Adam Ulrich took the 200-yard backstroke in 1:48.00, and Denison won the 800-yard freestyle relay in 2:59.63.

Twin brothers Jon and Robert Dohring (Occidental) dominated the diving competition, as they finished first and second, respectively, in both events. After edging his brother in the one-meter springboard competition March 15, Jon defeated Robert again two days later in the three-meter discipline. Jon was named diver of the meet, while Occidental diving coach Roland King was named diving coach of the year.
The Kenyon win earned head coach Jim Steen his 14th coach-of-the-year award.
