Division III swimming is synonymous with Kenyon, and after a two-year hiatus, the women’s crown is back in Gambier, Ohio.

Kenyon won its 21st national title March 10, finishing well ahead of second-place Amherst at the 2007 Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Houston.

Kenyon finished with 538 points while Amherst totaled 320. Two-time defending national champion Emory was third with 295 points. During the three-day event, the Ladies won eight of the 18 swimming events.

On the final day of competition, junior Jaime Straub started things well for Kenyon, notching her first career individual title in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17 minutes, .08 seconds. The Ladies also placed second and fifth in the race, as senior Rebecca Allison and freshman Danielle Arad helped Kenyon earn 51 total points in the event.

Two days earlier, Arad earned a hard-fought victory in the 500-yard freestyle. With five swimmers all within 0.40 seconds of Arad after 300 meters, the freshman pulled away to win the national title in 4:56.56. Washington U. in St. Louis’ Kelly Kono came in second.

Sophomore Carolyn Barer provided the most dramatic improvement for Kenyon on Saturday, earning a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke. At last year’s championship, Barer finished 25th in the same event.  Freshman Emily Jacobssen finished eighth in the race.

During the first day of competition March 8, sophomore Elizabeth Carlton was the story for Kenyon, playing a role in three national titles.  After swimming a leg for the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team, Carlton won an individual title in the 50-yard freestyle (23.15). Later in the day, Carlton swam with the victorious 400-yard medley relay team.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Middlebury’s Marika Ross claimed the national title with a time of 2:20.26.  Kaitlyn Orstein (Washington and Jefferson College) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:17.36.

Amherst’s Brittany Sasser was named swimmer of the meet after a series of record-setting performances.  On Saturday, Sasser broke her previous Division III record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.55 in the morning preliminary heat. Sasser came back to win the event in the afternoon with a mark of 1:59.15. On Friday, Sasser set a Division III record en route to claiming the 100-yard backstroke title.

Calvin’s Erica Deur was named diver of the meet. After winning the one-meter springboard competition on Thursday, Deur finished second to MIT’s Doria Holbrook in the three-meter competition Saturday.

Amherst coach Nick Nichols was named swim coach of the year and Calvin’s Aaron Paskran earned accolades for diving coach of the year.
