Heading into extra innings with the Division III Baseball Championship on the line isn’t a scenario that can be simulated accurately in practice.

Kean Coach Neil Ioviero’s philosophy is to try to create situations during the season so his team isn’t surprised when they comes up in the course of a game.

Still, there wasn’t much to prepare Cougars’ shortstop Perry Schatzow when he came to the plate in a 4-4 game with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning with everything on the line.

Schatzow delivered an infield hit to score Joseph D’Andrea with the winning run as Kean edged Emory, 5-4, to earn the Division III national title in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, May 29.

“If you asked the question to them (the players), how do we practice, you’ll see that it’s not loose when we practice,” said Ioviero, whose team went 4-0 at the finals site. “We get on them like crazy. We create crazy, pressure situations. We make the biggest deal out of the littlest things.”

Ioviero, whose team finished 43-8, believes that is the best way to create a sense of calm for his student-athletes.

“We describe it to them like you study for a test,” he said. “The teacher can throw whatever she wants at you and you’re prepared. These guys play as if they’re prepared, and that creates that looseness, because they know they’re ready to go — they know those little things are going to matter.”

Schatzow said he hit a slider to produce the winning run.

“I think I should have hit it better,” he told the Appleton (Wisconsin) Post-Crescent. “But it got the job done.”

D’Andrea, who had two triples in the final game, led off the winning rally by reaching base on a fielding error. He advanced to third on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt.

The ensuing intentional walk and a shallow fly ball to center set the stage for Schatzow to deliver Kean’s first baseball championship.

“No matter how much money you make or what position you’re in in life, you can’t buy these things,” Ioviero said. “You have to earn them. And no matter what they do for the rest of their lives, the memories they’ve created and garnered here will be with them the rest of their lives.”

Andrew Cupido earned the win on the mound for the Cougars by throwing 5.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Emory, 43-10, battled its way to the championship game despite losing its opener, 2-0, to Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Eagles made their way through the consolation bracket to be the last obstacle for Kean to hurdle.

Emory pitcher Ian Ganzer went nine innings with only two days of rest. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs.

“That’s the character of the team,” said Emory coach Mike Twardoski. “For Ian to pitch like he did on two days rest was incredible.”

Kean put four players on the all-tournament team — D’Andrea, Schatzow, and pitchers Joseph Augustine and Daniel Zeffiro. Emory first baseman Steve Bralver, third baseman Frank Pfister, shortstop Brandon Custer and pitcher Jason Glushon also were named to the team.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point pitcher/designated hitter Jordan Zimmerman, who allowed just one hit in a 2-0 win over Emory and hit a tournament-best .615 (8-for-13) with three doubles, two home runs and six RBI, was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. Chapman outfielder Tyler Dean and Carthage second baseman Steve Rucks also earned all-tournament honors.
