The NCAA News

In its eighth consecutive NCAA championship appearance, the St. John’s (Minnesota) men’s golf team claimed its first national title. The Johnnies combined to shoot a 52-over-par 1,204 to win the Division III crown.

The Johnnies’ previous best was a third-place showing in 2003. They also finished among the top 10 in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Traditionally a football powerhouse, St. John’s won its fifth national title and first in a sport other than football.

“This is really humbling,” head coach Bob Alpers told the St. Cloud Times. “There are so many good teams here and so many great players. But our guys had a plan and they executed it. It was really an honor to watch them play the way they did this week.”

Junior Clinton Dammann claimed medalist honors for the first time in his career with a 1-under-par 287. The Glencoe, Minnesota, native was consistent throughout his four rounds, shooting 72, 71, 72 and 72 to finish eight strokes ahead of second-place finishers Jacob Collinsworth of Huntingdon and Andy Miller of Otterbein.

“We did it — we won a national title,” Dammann said to the St. Cloud Times. “It really hasn’t sunk in yet. This is something you dream about, and now it’s finally happened.”

Senior Andrew Longbella was the second finisher for St. John’s, coming in seventh with a four-round total of 302. Teammates Matt Bohlig and Joe Daly tied for 26th place, each shooting 310 for the Johnnies.  Sophomore Joe Schoolmeesters, the 2007 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, finished in a logjam for 52nd place.

This is the second consecutive season, and fourth in the last seven, that an institution from the 12-state Central Region has won the Division III men’s golf title. Nebraska Wesleyan won it last year, and fellow MIAC member Gustavus Adolphus won in 2004. Wisconsin-Eau Claire won in 2001.

After shooting 10-over-par in the first two rounds, La Verne’s Rizal Amin battled back to finish tied with Longbella with a 14-over-par 302. Chris Davis was La Verne’s second-place finisher, coming in 13th overall with a 305.

Ohio Wesleyan, Huntingdon and Oglethorpe rounded out the top five in the team standings. Nebraska Wesleyan, last year’s champion, tied for 10th.
