Eagles stretch separation from field in men’s track

The NCAA News

It wasn’t the rain during the Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships that left the field feeling swept away.

Wisconsin-La Crosse reset its own record for margin of victory and claimed its sixth team title in seven years with a 65-point win at the May 24-26 championships at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The Eagles collected championships in the hammer throw and 1,600-meter relay, and also claimed second and third place in the pole vault to win their 11th overall title — extending the Division III record — but first for new coach Brent Ericksen.

“The first one is always special and to win by the amount of points we did is incredible,” Ericksen told the La Crosse Tribune. “These guys worked hard for it.”
Substantial rain popped up a couple of times during the championships, but it was the 23 Eagles who qualified to compete at the championships who generated the meet’s real flood. Wisconsin-La Crosse accumulated 99 points at the championships, easily overcoming runner-up Cortland State’s 34 points.

The Eagles’ Kevin Becker won his second hammer throw title in three years and the 1,600-meter relay team claimed its fourth title in five years. The latter victory was anchor Tony Marcinek’s third relay win in four years.

“We couldn’t have finished any better, going out with a win in the relay and the win as a team,” Marcinek said. “It’s the best way the seniors could have ended it.”

In the pole vault, Wisconsin-La Crosse’s John Heinz actually matched the meet’s best jump at 4.96 meters (16 feet, 3¼ inches), but Peter Sprecher of Monmouth (Illinois) won the event. Heinz’s teammate, defending event champion Matt Novak, finished tied for third.

The men’s competition featured two double titlists: Will Leer of Pomona-Pitzer, who followed his indoor championship in the mile earlier this year with outdoor victories in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs, and Buffalo State’s Willie Hordge, who swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

One returning champion, Bobby Young of Lincoln (Pennsylvania), successfully defended his title in the 400-meter run.
