Facilities: Muskingum College unveiled its new multi-million dollar football locker room complex and athletic training center this month in its Recreation Center/John Glenn Gymnasium. The new 14,000-square-foot complex includes a varsity and freshman football locker rooms and meeting rooms for offense and defense; a players’ lounge; multiple high-definition televisions; rooms for video and issuing equipment; a taping room, rehabilitation facility and therapeutic immersions pools; and a laundry center. “This much-needed renovation recognizes the generosity of two families who have matched their previous gifts to Caldwell Hall (the college’s communication arts building) to launch a new era of renovation in our athletics facilities,” said Muskingum College President Anne C. Steele. “Those donors, William A. and Sandra Cooper and Carl F. and Kristin Kalnow, help Muskingum fulfill its promise to educate the whole person — providing our students with enhanced opportunities to enjoy the physical, social and educational benefits of collegiate athletics.”

Miscellaneous: The John Jay College of Criminal Justice baseball team was honored August 22 by the New York City Council with a proclamation that not only honors the Bloodhounds’ City University of New York Athletic Conference baseball crown last spring but also the baseball program’s community-service work. “We are very flattered and honored by this proclamation,” said head coach Dan Palumbo, who was himself recently honored as John Jay’s 2007 Outstanding Employee of the Year. “And I’m extremely happy for the players who give so much of themselves for the cause of this program.” The team hosts an annual fund-raising dinner in memory of former John Jay baseball coach Lou DeMartino to honor individuals in the baseball community, and also sponsors and hosts a holiday party for underprivileged children. In 2006, the team helped rebuild a Little League baseball complex in Brooklyn. Team members also participate in a wide variety of campus events, including volunteering for freshman orientation and the annual college open house. Squad members also excel in the classroom, posting a 3.2 team grade-point average. “The players here have to overcome barriers that the kids at the colleges I coached at before didn’t have to,” said Palumbo, pointing out that John Jay is a commuter college with no on-campus housing and that the team’s playing field is 20 miles away from the campus. “Because of that, these kids build character that most people their age don’t have to.” The proclamation honoring the team was sponsored by New York City Councilwoman Gail Brewer ... Wittenberg College has established a scholarship in memory of alumnus Pam Smith, the school’s former head women’s basketball coach and associate director of athletics who died in July after a lengthy battle with cancer. The Pam Evans Smith ’82 Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a woman student in the senior class who has demonstrated leadership and academic abilities. “The fund (supporting the scholarship) is an opportunity to honor Pam for all her years of dedication to the Wittenberg and Springfield (Ohio) communities and to carry on the legend of what she stood for,” said her husband, Roger Smith. “She deserves to have her legacy continued, and this is a way to carry on her name to the benefit of future Wittenberg students.” During 21 years as women’s basketball coach, Smith led her teams to a 401-170 record, 11 North Coast Athletic Conference titles and eight Division III Women’s Basketball Championship appearances. She ended her final season ranked among the top 30 active Division III coaches in total wins and winning percentage. As a biology major at Wittenberg, she was a second-team Academic All-America selection, and she still holds the record for season scoring average at the school.
