Conferences: Western New England College this fall will begin competition in 16 sports in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The school, which previously competed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, becomes the Commonwealth Coast’s 14th member institution and joins schools from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island in the league. Western New England, which sponsors 19 varsity sports, also will retain membership in the New England Football Conference, ECAC Northeast (men’s ice hockey) and the New England College Conference Wrestling Association.

Facilities: Howard Payne University will use a gift from TexasBank to install a portable basketball floor and goals in Brownwood Coliseum, the civic arena where the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams play. “On behalf of Howard Payne University, I want to express deep gratitude to TexasBank for this very generous grant, which will greatly enhance our basketball program,” said Lanny Hall, university president. “The new floor and goals will be enjoyed by players, spectators and the entire community for decades to come. We are most grateful.” The gift was announced by C. Norman Tinkler, the bank’s vice chair and chief executive officer and a 1975 graduate of the university. “Our desire is to help continue the momentum that has been building over a number of years through the success of the men’s and women’s basketball programs,” he said. “HPU is such an important partner, both in business and in our community. Its success is vital to the continuing growth that Brownwood and surrounding areas are experiencing. We are committed to helping HPU achieve its goals.” The basketball teams have played in the arena since the 1960s, and the facility’s current floor already was 10 years old when it was installed at the arena’s opening in 1964. The current goals also were constructed in the early 1960s. The Howard Payne women’s team set a Division III women’s basketball attendance record of 4,020 fans in Brownwood Coliseum earlier this year in the second round of the Division III Women’s Basketball Championship.
