Sports sponsorship: The University of New England will sponsor varsity men’s ice hockey beginning with the 2010-11 academic year, reinstating a sport that the school sponsored from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s while an NAIA member. The team actually will begin competition in 2007-08 as a “pre-varsity” program, school officials said. “This is an incredible opportunity to bring back a program that accomplished so much,” said Athletics Director Kim Allen, recalling the school’s three NAIA district titles and subsequent national tournament appearances. “Ice hockey is a sport with great Maine traditions with a lot of support and interest in the greater Portland and Biddeford areas. The return of ice hockey to our university will energize our campus and our alumni, and contribute to building an athletics program that is regionally and nationally prominent,” she said ... Daniel Webster College again will sponsor men’s volleyball, which it discontinued after sponsoring the sport from 1996 through 1998. After a year of club-level competition, the school plans of elevate the program to varsity status for 2008-09 and apply for membership in the North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association. Men’s volleyball is the third new sport the school has announced it will sponsor during recent months. Late last year, the school also unveiled plans to sponsor programs in field hockey and women’s lacrosse, and the most recent additions will boost Daniel Webster’s roster of sports offerings to 13 varsity teams.

Facilities: Trinity University (Texas) recently broke ground for its new Clarence Mabry Pavilion at Delavan Tennis Stadium. The pavilion, which will serve as a tournament headquarters and press box for varsity tennis matches, is named for the longtime coach who served at the school from 1956 until his retirement in 1974. Alumni of the tennis program, which claimed a Division I team title under Mabry in 1972 behind singles champion Dick Stockton, secured pledges of more than $500,000 for construction of the pavilion. Another former player under Mabry, current men’s and women’s tennis coach Butch Newman, said the pavilion will serve as a central hub for matches and team meetings, while providing display space for Trinity tennis trophies and memorabilia. The 81-year-old Mabry attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

Milestones: Rick Dell posted his 700th career victory in baseball April 26 when The College of New Jersey defeated William Paterson University. Dell, now in his 26th season at the school, became just the 10th active Division III coach to achieve the milestone and the 16th coach overall to do so. The nationally ranked Lions also have posted 23 20-victory seasons under Dell’s tutelage, including the last 10 consecutive years ... Charlotte Slocum celebrated victory No. 600 in softball April 20 when College Misericordia beat Wesley College. Slocum is only the sixth softball coach in Division III history to surpass the 600-win mark ... Dennis Martel won his 500th baseball game April 28 when Illinois Wesleyan University defeated Augustana College (Illinois). Martel has coached at the school since 1988 ... Miscellaneous: New Jersey City University basketball sophomore Dana John was honored during April by the New York Knicks with that club’s monthly Sweetwater Clifton City Spirit Award. John was honored during the Knicks’ last regular-season home game at Madison Square Garden in a ceremony that also involved NBA great John Starks. John has balanced basketball with academic work, caring for a 3-year-old son and working full time for the U.S. Postal Service — an achievement that prompted the Knicks to honor the 26-year-old all-Eastern College Athletic Conference forward for making a significant difference in the lives of others. The award is named for Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, the Knicks’ first African-American player.

Learning, leadership and service — Student-athletes from each of the eight Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference member schools planned and participated in a recent community-service project that featured a visit to the Cape Cod Nursing Home in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, to share dessert and conversation. The 23 MASCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representatives also visited Massachusetts Maritime Academy — the conference member institution whose project SAAC members voted to participate in after hearing community-service proposals from each conference school’s student-athletes. “This was an excellent opportunity for the MASCAC student-athletes to give back to the community as well as learn about presentation and event-management skills,” said MASCAC Commissioner Angela Baumann.
