The NCAA News

After doing his part to make sure Abilene Christian would remain perfect in team competition during his career, the Wildcats’ Nicodemus Naimadu etched some perfection of his own into the Division II Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships record book.

The Wildcats won their sixth straight outdoor title and Naimadu completed his outdoor career undefeated in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the May 24-26 meet at Johnson C. Smith.

Naimadu just missed claiming another individual title on the meet’s opening night when he came up just short in a sprint to the finish with Cal State Chico’s Scott Bauhs in the 10,000-meter run. The 10,000 meters is the only long-distance race at the championships that Naimadu hasn’t won.

Still, his eight points in the event gave the Wildcats a lead in the team standings they never relinquished en route to a 32 ½-point victory over runner-up Saint Augustine’s.
Two days later, after teammates stepped up with wins in the 800-meter run, triple jump and decathlon, Naimadu claimed the 11th NCAA individual championship of his career (including cross country and indoor track) with a meet-record time of 8:36.24 in the steeplechase.

“I wanted more than anything in the world for him to win his last race,” said Abilene Christian coach Don Hood. “When he lost the 10,000 Thursday night, a lot of our guys went to him and said, ‘Don’t worry. Watch us.’ And sure enough, they stepped up.”
Camille Vandendreissche protected the lead on the second day with his win in the decathlon. He also joined Jessica Withrow of Abilene Christian’s women’s team in an unprecedented sweep by student-athletes from the same school of the decathlon and heptathlon.

Then, Julius Nyango won the 800-meter run on the meet’s final day and the Wildcats’ Davy Manga and Vladyslav Gorbenko finished first and second in the triple jump to clinch Abilene Christian’s 17th overall outdoor team title.

The steeplechase win was Naimadu’s third straight in the event at the Division II championships, but the record is Naimadu’s first in NCAA competition. He won the event by eight seconds over Kim Hogarth of Western State.

“I wasn’t focused on the record because the pace was slow,” Naimadu said of the early portion of the race, “but then I saw I had a chance. I am happy I got it.”
In another notable individual performance, Ashland’s Kibwe Johnson set a championships record in the hammer throw on opening day then collected the discus title two days later — claiming his second and third titles of the year after smashing the indoor weight throw record in March. Johnson’s teammate, Bryan Vickers, won the shot put to complete Ashland’s sweep of the weight throws.

Jim Dilling of Minnesota State Mankato won his second outdoor high jump title in three years and completed an indoor-outdoor sweep of the event — outdueling annual rival and defending champion Keith Moffatt of Morehouse for the title.
Also, Decosma Wright of Lincoln (Missouri) successfully defended his title in the 110-meter hurdles, as did Saint Augustine’s sprinters Kendall Stevens in the 100-meter dash and Philippe DeRosier in the 200-meter dash.
