Tale of two nines ends happily for Barry golfers

Barry coach Jimmy Stobs felt comfortable with his team’s lead after the front nine of the final round at the Division II Men’s Golf Championships.

“But we let it slip away on the back,” Stobs said. “It came down to the wire, but the guys managed to sink putts when they needed to and they came out on top.”

Senior Hernan Borja, who finished second overall with a four-round score of 291 (+7), led the way to Barry’s first men’s golf title at Grand Valley State’s Meadows Course May 22-25.

“We are just very excited right now,” Stobs said. “It’s just a tremendous feeling to win a national title.”

That feeling was in doubt late, largely because the Buccaneers gave the field 13 bogeys on the back nine. Barry led the field from start to finish, but Borja, who had an ace in the opening round, had to come to the rescue with the tournament on the line at the par-4 18th, sinking a six-foot par putt to seal his team’s victory.

“After we made the turn, I glanced at the leader board and saw we had started to falter a little bit,” Borja said. “Finally, on the final hole, coach (Stobs) came up to me and said we were tied for the lead. That final putt was on an uphill lie and I was shaking, but I just told myself that I needed to make this putt and managed to knock it in.”

“All season he has been the team leader and it came down to him sinking that final putt for us to win the national title,” said Stobs, who was named coach of the year by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Barry outdueled a competitive field, edging second-place South Carolina-Upstate by one stroke, third-place Florida Southern by two and fourth-place Columbus State by three. Washburn rounded out the top five, 10 strokes back.

The race for medalist honors wasn’t quite as tight. Columbus State’s Christian Ries was consistently good with rounds of 73,71,70 and 72 to best Borja by four shots. Ries’ teammate Andrew Georgiou shared third place with Josh Gallman of South Carolina-Upstate and Iain Hall of Queens (New York), six shots off the pace. Gallman’s final-round 67 was a tournament best.

The title is Barry’s seventh in team sports and first in men’s sports. The Buccaneers have three crowns in women’s soccer (1989, 1992, 1993) and three in women’s volleyball (1995, 2001, 2004).
