Saint Augustine’s claimed its second straight men’s indoor team crown and joined the Falcon women’s team in posting the first men’s and women’s sweep at the Division II Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships since the school accomplished that feat in 2001.

The Falcon men, coached by George Williams, easily outpointed Abilene Christian’s men, 88-48½ in claiming the school’s ninth men’s team indoor title.

Senior Jamal Torrance boosted Saint Augustine’s with a record time of 21.19 seconds in the 200-meter dash and also collected a repeat victory in the 400-meter run. The Falcons as a team did the most damage to competitors in the 200-meter race, where Torrance led three teammates in racking up 22 points from the event.

That event’s runner-up, sophomore Dennis Boone, also finished second in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the long jump to individually contribute 22 points to the Falcon effort.

Other notable Falcon performances include third-place finishes by Dior Lowry in the 60-meter hurdles and Randy Curry in the 400-meter run.

Saint Augustine’s, which also won the 1,600-meter relay, scored in eight events to post the largest margin of victory at the championships since Abilene Christian outpointed the Falcons by 89 points in 1997.

Only one other record besides Torrance’s 200-meter mark was posted at the meet, but in came in a monumental effort by Kibwe Johnson of Ashland. His weight-throw toss of 25.08 meters (82 feet, 3 ½ inches) not only smashed the Division II meet record in the event by nearly 15 feet but also topped the five-year-old U.S. collegiate indoor mark held by Kansas’ Scott Russell.

Five other event winners joined Torrance as repeat titlists from last year, including Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian, who won his third straight 5,000-meter run crown to extend his career total of cross country and indoor and outdoor individual championships to 10.

Other repeat winners included Aucencio Martinez of Adams State, who edged Naimadu in the mile run for the second straight year; Nick Lara of Adams State in the 800-meter run; and Decosma Wright of Lincoln in the 60-meter hurdles. Also, Jim Dilling of Minnesota State Mankato outdueled Keith Moffatt of Morehouse for the second straight year in the high jump.

A double titlist from last year, Wilbert Walker of Lincoln (Missouri), finished second in the triple jump and third in the long jump, and defending shot put and weight throw champion Brian Vickers of Ashland recorded top-three finishes in both of those events.
