Milestones: West Virginia State University women’s volleyball coach Shannon Gerencir won her 100th match September 26 against Concord University. She is in her sixth year at the institution ... Franklin Pierce University senior all-American James Thorpe entered his name in the record books in the No. 6-ranked Ravens’ 0-0 double-overtime draw with rival Southern Connecticut State University October 17. Thorpe broke the NCAA Division II career record for minutes played by a goalkeeper, surpassing former Southern Connecticut State all-American Bo Oshoniyi’s (1990-93) 7,580 minutes at the 43:06-mark of the first half. Thorpe has now played 7,646:55 over his four-year career at Franklin Pierce. He also posted his eighth shutout of the season (45th career).

Miscellaneous: Valdosta State University’s women’s basketball team launched a campaign called “Shoot for a Cure” that promotes breast-cancer awareness. Every three-pointer the Lady Blazers make at home games this season translates into a donation to the Partnership Cancer Fund of Lowndes County, Georgia ... The Western Washington University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee spearheaded a ticket-selling campaign for the October 20 “Battle in Seattle” against Seattle University to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The effort raised more than $6,000. Western Washington volleyball coach and SAAC advisor Diane Flick said the fund-raiser gave the students an opportunity to work together toward a common goal. “These (Make-A-Wish) kids may never have the opportunities our students and athletes have, but through this program they will get to experience something special,” she said ... The Peach Belt Conference launched a new Web site at www.peachbeltconference.org. In addition to the new design, the site features players of the week, conference scores, standings and news releases. “The Peach Belt has always maintained a strong Web presence, and with information available to anyone anywhere in the world it was important for us to stay on the cutting edge of technology,” said Commissioner Dave Brunk. “This site’s navigation and user-friendly appeal includes all dimensions of the conference for Peach Belt fans, alums, student-athletes, coaches, administrators and the media.”
