For the first time in five years, Florida Southern’s women’s golf program finished the season as national champions, finishing 10 strokes ahead of second-place Rollins.

The Moccasins toured the difficult Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Florid, in 36-over-par to defeat Rollins, which had won the previous four national titles. Before Rollins’ run, Florida Southern had won three consecutive national championships (2000-02).

“This means everything to us and our school,” said Florida Southern head coach Robbie Davis. “I’m thrilled to death because we worked so hard to win the prize.”

Despite shooting over 300 in its final round, Florida Southern was able to cruise to victory based on its performance during the first three days of the tournament. With a 297 on the first day of competition, Florida Southern staked itself to a nine-stroke lead over Rollins after 18 holes. The Moccasins got even better during the next two days, shooting 296 and 293 to solidify their position atop the standings.

Lindsey Bergeon and Heather Burgner were Florida Southern’s top individual finishers, coming in third and fourth, respectively. Bergeon finished with a 7-over-par 295, one stroke ahead of Burgner.

“This was our ultimate goal, and it has been a long time coming,” said Bergeon. “We all picked each other up when we needed to. The goal was to win as a team. I would trade in an individual title for a team title any day.”

Florida Tech sophomore Daniela Iacobelli won a hotly contested battle for the individual national title, edging Nova Southeastern’s Maria Garcia Austt by one stroke.
Iacobelli became the first golfer participating as an individual to win a national title. After beginning the final day tied for first, Iacobelli eagled the par-5 10th hole and followed with a birdie on the 12th to jump ahead. She finished the final round with a 74, winning the tournament with a 5-over-par 293.

“It was very challenging because it was just me without the support of my teammates,” said Iacobelli. “After my round, I was pacing the clubhouse and preparing for a possible playoff by practicing on the putting green.”

A trio of Rollins golfers finished near the top of the individual standings, as Cristina Gugler, Laura Fourdraine and Vanessa Vela were all within one stroke of each other. Gugler finished sixth with a 10-over-par 298 while Fourdraine and Vela tied for seventh with an 11-over-par 299.

Ferris State finished 30 strokes behind Rollins to come in third. Drury and Tarleton State were fourth and fifth, respectively.
