The NCAA News

Double titlist Davita Prendergast led Lincoln (Missouri) to its fifth straight team crown at the Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 24-26 at Johnson C. Smith.

Prendergast completed a sweep of this year’s indoor and outdoor 200-meter races and also successfully defended her outdoor title in the 400 meters to lead Lincoln to a 13 ½-point victory over runner-up Abilene Christian.

Prendergast also joined with teammate Carla Thomas — who claimed her own individual crown in the 400-meter hurdles — to post a meet record in the 1,600-meter relay.

The Blue Tigers scored all but one of their points on the final day of competition after spotting Grand Valley State a 24-point lead through the first two days of the championships. Lincoln quickly chased down the team point leaders as Prendergast and Thomas led a 46-point effort in the three sprint races and the 400 hurdles, and built its margin with a runner-up finish in the 400-meter relay and the victory in the 1,600 relay.

Lincoln’s teamwork also overcame another outstanding individual performance by Saint Augustine’s junior Kwonya Ferguson, who followed her unprecedented three-title performance in the jumps at this year’s indoor championships with victories in the long jump and triple jump. Ferguson is the first woman to complete indoor and outdoor sweeps of both events in a year.

Saint Augustine’s actually matched Lincoln’s four event victories, also collecting wins from the 400-meter relay team anchored by Ferguson and from Barbara Pierre in the 100-meter dash. But Abilene Christian nosed ahead of Saint Augustine’s for runner-up honors in team competition, fueled by Jessica Withrow’s come-from-behind victory in the heptathlon and second-place finishes in three other events.

Mandi Zemba of Grand Valley State successfully defended titles in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs, posting a record time in the first event. She completed her career with a total of seven individual championships, including five in outdoor competition, one in indoor competition earlier this year, and a cross country title in 2005. She also anchored a distance medley relay team to a win in record time at this year’s indoor championships.

Also repeating as a winner — but in a different event — was Zolymar Febles of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. The defending long jump champion finished second behind Ferguson in that event but won the 100-meter hurdles.

Two-time indoor titlist Venessa Lee of Pittsburg State claimed her first outdoor victory in the 800-meter run to complete an indoor-outdoor sweep of the event. Two other winners of indoor events earlier this year also claimed outdoor titles: Pierre of Saint Augustine’s, who won the 60-meter dash in March, and 1,500-meter run titlist Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific, who won the mile run indoors.
