nullMiscellaneous: Adelphi University has unveiled a series of athletics logos recognizing the school’s “Year of the Cat” campaign. Adelphi’s new Panther logo will be launched in January after a year-long process in which the university enlisted Phoenix Design Works to create new marks. “The new logos Phoenix Design has created truly define our mission and goals, which are sportsmanship, academic excellence and community service,” said Director of Athletics Robert E. Hartwell. Some of the new marks already have appeared on the men and women’s soccer uniforms and media publications. The marks will appear on other team uniforms as part of a gradual rollout as the university phases out the old panther logo to account for new apparel. Adelphi adopted the Panther as its mascot in the early 1950s and has seen numerous variations over the years. The former Adelphi logo, featuring the Panther jumping through the AU, has been associated with the program in some form for the past 30 years. “Our old panther didn’t signify strength, and it was very one-dimensional,” Hartwell said. “In addition to looking more like a panther, the new marks give our coaches and staff more options for equipment and apparel. They also provide the department with licensing and merchandising opportunities.” ... The St. Cloud State University athletics department will be adding more muscle in 2007-08, thanks in part to a donation by National Hockey League veteran Bret Hedican. A former standout for the Huskies ice hockey team from 1988 to 1991, Hedican recently donated a leg-curl machine, a leg-press machine, a ‘Smith” machine, a squat rack and a cable cross lat pulldown machine. “We appreciate the generous contribution to our program,” said St. Cloud State Athletics Director Morris Kurtz. “These types of contributions to our athletics program really help our teams remain competitive in our conferences and at the national level.” Hedican was an all-Western Collegiate Hockey Association defenseman during his collegiate career. He still owns the team record for most points in a season by a defenseman with 48 in 1990-91. He has played professionally with St. Louis, Vancouver, Florida and Carolina. In 2006, Hedican and teammate Matt Cullen (another former Husky) helped Carolina win the Stanley Cup ...
