Conferences: The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced that Chowan University will join the league as a football-only member beginning in 2008. Chowan, in Murfreesboro North Carolina, is located near CIAA member Elizabeth City State University and CIAA fan bases in Hampton Roads, Newport News and Virginia Beach. “Our vision for the CIAA is to grow all aspects of the conference and create a dynamic mixture of culture, history and geographic relevance,” said Commissioner Leon G. Kerry. “We feel that Chowan University joining our football program is a great step on that path.” Chowan competes as an independent in other sports.

Milestones: Wayne State University (Michigan) women’s tennis head coach Sheila Snyder earned her 150th career victory in a season-opening 8-1 dual-match win over visiting Saginaw Valley State University September 21. Snyder, a former Wayne State tennis and basketball player, is in her 19th season as head coach. She has led the squad to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including a school-record 20 match wins in 2006-07.

Miscellaneous: The Peach Belt Conference has unveiled a new logo, only the second in the 17-year history of the league. “It was time for an updated look,” said Commissioner David R. In addition, the percentage of institutions eligible to participate in the regional sessions has steadily increased. Jamie Wolf of Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Mike Klobucher of Ferris State University have been named the top female and male Division II Scholar-Athletes of the Year by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. The Division II Scholar-Athletes of the Year awards are sponsored by Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. In the eight-year history of the award, Wolf gives the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference its first national award winner, while Klobucher is the second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference winner since 2003-04. “We all are proud of the quality student-athletes that Division II institutions produce annually,” said Jim Naumovich, commissioner of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and president of the Division II CCA. “Disney’s Wide World of Sports has helped Division II in many ways and we are grateful to Disney Sports Attractions for helping us recognize this outstanding talent.” Wolf graduated with a perfect undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of 4.0 at Clarion, earning a degree in molecular biology. She has accepted an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and will attend Ohio State University to major in molecular genetics. A member of the school’s perennial-power diving team, she ended her four-year career as the three-time NCAA II Female Diver of the Year (2007, 2005, 2004) and won an NCAA-record seven national championships in eight tries. Klobucher also graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning his applied biology degree from Ferris State. A football player, Klobucher helped his squad to an 8-3 overall record, 7-3 in the GLIAC. He led the team in tackles with 92 (47 solo) and recorded six for loss. In 2006, he was named to the American Football Coaches Association Division II All-America team and ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team. He also was a National Football Foundation Draddy Trophy Finalist and a member of the NFF’s inaugural National Honor Society.
