Sports sponsorship: Assumption College will add women’s swimming to its intercollegiate athletics in 2008-09 after one year as a club sport. The sport will begin operations in 2007-08 as a club sport. “The addition creates a gender balance that provides more opportunities to our female student-athletes to participate in Division II athletics,” said Athletics Director Ted Paulauskas. Longtime Assumption faculty member Stuart Cromarty will serve as the head coach. He was a standout swimmer for Boston University and the South African national team, and has more than 10 years of coaching experience. The addition of women’s swimming increases the college’s offerings to 23 sports.
Milestones: Two Barton College coaches reached milestones last year. Baseball coach Todd Wilkinson reached 400 career victories when the Bulldogs beat Anderson University twice April 14. Wilkinson is now 402-348-3 in his 15 seasons at Barton. And 11-year men’s basketball coach Ron Lievense attained his 200th victory February 24 when the Bulldogs, who were amid a 21-game win streak en route to the Division II national championship, topped Limestone College. Lievense is 209-102 at Barton.
Miscellaneous: The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has changed its identifying mark and will unveil a new Web site August 15 that retains the www.wviac.org address. “We’re excited to put a fresh look on our public face,” said WVIAC Associate Commissioner Will Prewitt. “The online changes, along with the logo redesign, are going to be a positive for our membership. Our old marks were starting to look a bit dated.” The WVIAC is the largest conference in Division II with 16 members. The league founded in 1924 now offers championships in 16 men’s and women’s sports ... Bill Crabtree, former tennis coach at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce), former commissioner Fred Jacoby and longtime athletics director Don “Doc” Parham of Southeastern Oklahoma State University make up the 2007 class of inductees for the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor, which recognizes individuals who have brought pride and honor to the conference through their contributions as an athlete or who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the betterment of the conference as a coach or administrator.
