Conferences: The Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference will change its name to Conference Carolinas and operate with a new logo. Commissioner Alan Patterson and Coker College President James Dawson, who chairs the league’s executive committee, said the change will take effect June 1. Membership in the Division II conference will remain at 11 schools: Anderson University (South Carolina), Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker, Erskine College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, Pfeiffer University, Queens University of Charlotte and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Converse College is an affiliate member. “Three primary reasons prompted the change,” Patterson said. “Current members all reside in the Carolinas, the states of North and South Carolina have a highly favorable perception nationwide, and the historical and current success of collegiate athletics in the Carolinas is well known.” The name change also comes from a historical perspective when, before the CVAC, the conference was the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference but commonly known as the Carolinas Conference. The conference was first established in 1930. Barton is the only remaining charter member, followed in longevity by Pfeiffer (1960), and Mount Olive and St. Andrews (1988). The league sponsors men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s lacrosse. The new logo includes the colors in the flags of North and South Carolina.

Milestones: Basketball student-athlete Tony Cornett of West Virginia State University surpassed the 1,700-point mark and 1,000-rebound plateau in the same game when the Yellow Jackets beat Salem International University, 89-85, January 29. In a rematch of last spring’s West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship game, Cornett sank two free throws with 6.4 seconds remaining to put the contest out of reach. Cornett is third on the Yellow Jackets’ all-time career rebounds list and sixth on the scoring ladder ... Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania field hockey head coach Bertie Landes became just the 19th coach in NCAA history (all divisions) to win 300 career games this fall. In 27 seasons as a college head coach, including 19 years at Philadelphia Biblical and eight at Shippensburg, Landes finished the season with a career record of 307-92-22.
