Conferences: The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association has launched themiaa.tv, which is the portal to access live video of MIAA events on the Internet. The agreement with Penn Atlantic gives member schools the ability to offer live Webcasts of games on a pay-per-view basis. “Expanding the exposure and visibility of the MIAA has been a goal of mine since I came to this conference nearly 10 years ago,” Commissioner Ralph McFillen said. “With the high costs of traditional television production, using the worldwide reach of the Internet to broadcast our events seemed to be a logical step. We believe parents, alumni and fans will enjoy having the luxury of watching and listening to MIAA action through themiaa.tv, especially those who can’t easily see their favorite teams on a regular basis in person.” All basketball Webcasts available through the site will be only $4 per game. Games can be ordered in advance or while they are in progress. Initial plans are to offer conference games in men’s and women’s basketball, as well as football and volleyball next fall. Some schools may also choose to show nonconference games as well ... The MIAA also made news when it named a successor to McFillen, who announced he will retire in June. Jim Johnson, most recently the director of athletics at Texas A&M University-Commerce, has been selected as the next commissioner of the league. Johnson, one of 20 applicants for the position, will be just the third full-time commissioner in MIAA history. “I’m humbled by this selection,” Johnson said. “The MIAA is clearly one of the leading Division II conferences in the country. I look forward to continuing to build on the foundation Ralph has established.” Johnson has been AD at Texas A&M-Commerce since July 2005. Before that, Johnson spent two years at the University of Central Missouri as associate athletics director for development. Hhe also served as the institution’s government relations director. Johnson also worked at the NCAA national office as part of the membership services staff from 1997 to 2002. Johnson provided staff liaison support to the Division II Legislation Committee, Membership Committee, Management Council and Presidents Council. He left the NCAA in 2002 to take a position as an intercollegiate athletics consultant with the law firm of Hall, Render, Killian, Heath and Lyman. He is a graduate of Tarleton State University.

Milestones: Philadelphia University men’s basketball coach Herb Magee, who was recently nominated to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, is on the verge of accumulating more wins than any other coach with at least 10 seasons in Division II. As of January 23, Magee  was at 827 with games January 24 at Holy Family University and January 27 at Post University. Clarence “Big House” Gaines won 828 games at Winston-Salem State University. Magee is in his 40th season at Philadelphia U. , taking the helm at the age of 25. Magee played basketball there as well. He has taken 21 teams to the NCAA Division II postseason tournament, including a championship run in 1970 ... Craig Turnbull claimed his 100th career victory in men’s soccer when Catawba College defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College this fall. Turnbull, who finished his ninth season at the school, led his team to a third straight appearance in the Division II postseason tournament.

Miscellaneous: During the recent 2007 NCAA Convention in Orlando, the Division II Conference Commissioners Association honored Disney’s Wide World of Sports for a decade of service, support and commitment to Division II student-athletes, coaches and institutions. The Disney Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, has been the site of the Division II Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Classic since the facility opened in 1997. Disney also co-sponsors the Division II CCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards that honor the top female and male Division II student-athletes for academic, athletics and community-service achievement. “Both programs have been tremendous for our Division II student-athletes and institutions over the past 10 years,” said Mike Marcil, commissioner of the Sunshine State Conference. “We also are excited about how they will continue to grow and contribute even more to the Division II strategic-positioning, community-engagement and identity initiatives.”
