Conferences: Chestnut Hill College will join the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference beginning with the 2007-08 season. Chestnut Hill, previously a Division III member, will be included in all regular-season schedules for the 2007-08 academic year but will not be eligible for conference tournaments. Chestnut Hill is a provisional Division II member on track to gain full membership in 2008-09. “The move to Division II is significant for Chestnut Hill because it provides students the opportunity to compete at a higher level without compromising their commitment to academic excellence,” said school President Carol Jean Vale. “The true scholar-athlete desires intense competition on the playing field or court, but likewise wants to be challenged in the classroom. The values of Division II share a wonderful congruence with the mission of Chestnut Hill. We readily accepted the invitation to join the CACC because the member schools have clearly demonstrated their dedication to these same values and to the primacy of academics.” Chestnut Hill currently sponsors 14 varsity sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis), and women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, softball and baseball. The other 12 CACC members are: Bloomfield College, Caldwell College, Dominican College (New York), Felician College, Georgian Court University, Goldey-Beacom College, Holy Family University, Nyack College, Philadelphia University, Post University, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and Wilmington College (Delaware).

Miscellaneous: Northwest Missouri State University named its new football field at Bearcat Stadium after coach Mel Tjeerdsma during a ceremony before the school’s season opener against Arkansas Tech University. “It is a well-deserved honor for him,” graduate assistant coach Josh Lamberson, who played quarterback and led the Bearcats to the 2005 NCAA Division II championship game, told the Kansas City Star. “He’s poured his heart and soul into this the last 14 years, building up this football program and really just being active in the community and making it something Maryville can be proud of.” Tjeerdsma said, “It will be a special time, not just for me, but for my family. All the players and all the coaches, that’s who are responsible for the success we’ve had.” Tjeerdsma went 0-11 with his first team, but since then, Northwest Missouri won back-to-back national titles in 1998-99 and made back-to-back trips to the championship game the last two seasons. He is 132-36 at Northwest Missouri State. Bearcats Athletics Director Bob Boerigter said the main reason the humble Tjeerdsma eventually agreed to the naming of the field is because it helped the school get donations for improvements. “Fans and alumni wanted to see our facility named in his honor, and they showed their support financially for the lights and new surface,” Boerigter said. “Mel’s a humble man. The name of the field really came from the Bearcat Nation.”  Northwest Missouri State’s first game on Tjeerdsma Field, though, was a wash — literally. The contest against Arkansas Tech lasted less than a quarter due to severe lightning and storms. Though the Bearcats were leading, 21-0, the Division II Football Committee ruled during an August 31 conference call with officials from both schools that the game was terminated. Thus, neither school will be credited with a win or a loss. NCAA statistics policies for football require at least three quarters of competition for inclusion, which was part of the rationale in making the decision. Input from both institutions and conferences, as well as the NCAA Football Rules Committee and NCAA Division II Football Committee were considered during the conference call ... Former College of Saint Rose all-American soccer student-athlete Kylee Litchfield played alongside Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy in the National Soccer Hall of Fame Game August 26 in Oneonta, New York. A two-year team captain who established herself as one of the finest defenders to ever don a Saint Rose uniform, Litchfield was a two-time all-Northeast-10 Conference pick and a two-time league all-academic selection. She also was the conference’s co-defender of the year as a senior. Litchfield will begin graduate study in educational psychology at Texas Tech University this fall ... California State University, Dominguez Hills, unveiled a redesigned Web site and athletics logos. “The new Web site, GoToros.com, is an important piece of the rebranding effort that Toros athletics has undertaken this past year and will, with our new marks, help us advance the Toros brand,” said Athletics Director Patrick Guillen. The new logos replace the triangle mark introduced in the 1980s. The primary mark, which features a fierce and statuesque bull, the university’s name, and the “DH” initials as the foundation, will be used as the main athletics logo appearing on all official material, while the monogram mark, a beveled “DH” in cardinal with a gold outline, features horns that jettison to form a semicircle at logo’s top, and will symbolize the brand of Toros athletics.
