The NCAA News

Central Oklahoma’s wealth of depth was too much for the rest of the teams to overcome at the Division II Wrestling Championships at Nebraska-Kearney March 9-10.

The third-ranked Bronchos snapped Nebraska-Omaha’s three-year reign as national champions by placing five wrestlers in the finals of their weight classes, and three more finished in the top five of their respective classes. The strong showing gave Central Oklahoma 124½ points, which comfortably outdistanced second-place Nebraska-Kearney’s 108½.

In fact, the team title was wrapped up before any of the 10 individual finals took place because the seven-time Division II champion Bronchos had built an insurmountable 22-point lead over top-ranked Nebraska-Kearney.

Kyle Evans was the only Central Oklahoma wrestler to capture an individual crown when he won the 141-pound title match, 7-0, over Shippensburg’s Steven Fittery.
The victory clinched a perfect 39-0 season for Evans. He is the first Central Oklahoma wrestler to complete an undefeated season at the Division II level.

“I thought about being undefeated a lot during the regular season, and it was starting to get to me,” said Evans, who is 93-18 for his career and the winner of 61 of his last 63 bouts. “But once we got to the regionals and nationals, it was a whole different season and I didn’t think about it. The team got closer, and I started thinking of the team goal and not individual ones.”

Evans, a junior, had his closest call of the season in the national semifinals when he edged West Liberty State’s Doug Sura, 4-2, in overtime.

Sura led, 2-0, 30 seconds into the match by scoring only the fourth takedown against Evans this season. The Central Oklahoma wrestler cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape and tied it with another escape in the third period.

Evans, a national runner-up last year, scored a takedown with three seconds left in the sudden-victory overtime to keep his record unblemished.

Tyler Zuckerman (125), Jared Henning (133), Jason Leavitt (157) and Josh LeadingFox (heavyweight) were all national runners-up for Central Oklahoma.

Henning, who was unranked entering the tournament, recorded wins over the Nos. 1, 2 and 6 seeds in making the finals. Two of his victories came against the last two national champions in the weight class. He dropped a tough 1-0 decision in the final to Kutztown’s Joe Kemmerer, who was seeded fourth.

Leavitt also lost a heartbreaker in the 157-pound final when he was edged, 2-1, in overtime by 149-pound defending national champion Antonio Guerra of Findlay.
“It’s a great feeling, and I couldn’t be more proud of my team and what they accomplished,” said Central Oklahoma coach David James, who was named Division II coach of the year for the fourth time. “We came ready to wrestle. We got contributions from all 10 guys, and they were just determined to get the job done.”
