Wisconsin’s track crown a big one for the Big Ten

The NCAA News

Add the Big Ten Conference to the small number of leagues that can boast of Division I indoor track team championships — thanks to Wisconsin.

The Badgers ended the Southeastern Conference’s 10-year stranglehold on the Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships March 9-10 at Arkansas, claiming the team trophy with the lowest winning score since 1991. With the win, the Big Ten became only the seventh currently existing league to boast an indoor team titlist in the 43-year history of the championships.

Wisconsin’s Chris Solinsky scored 19 of the Badgers’ 40 points by winning the 5,000-meter run on the meet’s first day, then finishing second in the 3,000-meter run. Solinsky came up two seconds short in his bid to repeat as 3,000-meter champion, but his finish in the event gave the Badgers a point margin that runner-up Florida State was unable to overcome in the meet’s final event, the 1,600-meter relay.

The Badgers finished five points ahead of Florida State. Texas was third, followed by Stanford and Auburn.

“It proves if you coach long enough, anyone can win,” 24-year Wisconsin coach Ed Nuttycombe joked after the meet. “We’ve been in the top 10 and top four, but this is the first time we’ve won it all. This year we were able to get enough people in the same place at the same time to get it done.

“The key was to optimize as many of the opportunities we had. There’s so few for every team, and the team that maximizes the best (wins) — and today, it was us.”
Solinsky certainly made the most of his opportunities, though he was disappointed he fell just short of becoming the first runner to double at 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the championships. He also was seeking an unprecedented third straight win at the 3,000-meter distance.

“He just had a better kick than I did today,” Solinsky said of 3,000 champ Lopez Lomong of Northern Arizona. “I just wasn’t able to run it out of him like I have been able to in the past.”

But Solinsky still found plenty to be happy about.

“The biggest picture is that we won the team title, and no Big Ten team has ever done that.”

The Badgers also got a big boost from senior Demi Omole in the 60-meter dash, where the eight points from his second-place finish topped Florida State’s six points from the duo of Greg Bolden (who placed fourth) and Walter Dix (who finished eighth after stumbling out of the blocks). The finish put the Badgers ahead to stay and set up Solinsky for the 3,000-meter run.

But Florida State’s Dix kept his team in the hunt with a second straight 200-meter dash victory, and teammate Richardo Chambers won the 400-meter run.
Also repeating as an event winner was Texas’ Donovan Kilmartin, who collected his second straight heptathlon title and third victory in four years.
