Top-ranked Gophers make title statement on mats

The NCAA News

Cole Konrad is quite an anchor in the heavyweight division for the Minnesota wrestling team.

The senior finished off his collegiate career in style by capturing his second consecutive individual championship to put the icing on the Golden Gophers’ 2007 national team title at the Division I Wrestling Championships March 17.

When Konrad took the mat for the last individual title match in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the Gophers had already clinched the team title. His pin of Penn State’s Aaron Anspach at 1:53 gave Minnesota 98 points and set off more celebration for the Gophers contingent. Iowa State, which needed two of its three finalists to win to overtake the Gophers, came in second with 88½ points.

Konrad is only the fourth wrestler in Minnesota history to capture back-to-back national individual titles. He ended this season 35-0, and he also won his last 76 matches for the Gophers.

“I can’t think of a better way to finish a career,” Konrad said.

Konrad joined Minnesota legends Verne Gagne, Tim Hartung and Damion Hahn as a two-time national champion. He finished with a 154-13-0 career record, just five wins behind the career record of 159 held by Ed Giese since 1986.

Konrad also had 50 pins, which rank second in school history. He joined Chad Kraft, Luke Becker, Jared Lawrence and Hahn as the only Minnesota wrestlers to be four-time all-Americans.

The Gophers entered the national meet ranked on top of the polls, but they didn’t garner all of the results they expected.

Dustin Schlatter (149) and Roger Kish (184) each earned third-place honors. Jayson Ness and C.P. Schlatter placed by finishing fifth and sixth in the 125- and 157-pound weight classes, respectively.

It turned out to be enough to win the title, even though the Gophers thought they would have more wrestlers near the top of weight classes.

“We had a tough semifinal round, but in a national tournament, you can’t expect everything to go the way you want,” Konrad said. ‘We focus our training on getting stronger as a tournament goes on, and we were able to bounce back (on the last day).”

Iowa State’s Trent Paulson pulled the Cylcones to within 3½ points of Minnesota by defeating Wisconsin’s Craig Henning, 6-4, in the 157-pound final.

That left matters up to Jake Varner (184) and Kurt Backes (197) to rally Iowa State.
However, Varner lost, 6-1, to Northwestern’s top-ranked and unbeaten 184-pounder Jake Herbert, and Backes fell, 6-4, in overtime to American’s Joshua Glenn in the 197 final.

“The true character of a team is when you get yourself in a hole and have to dig out,” said Minnesota coach J Robinson. “They responded when they had to and that’s what champions do. This was a team win. All nine guys contributed to this.”
