The NCAA News

When a team has won four of the last five national championships, a 35-point deficit doesn’t seem quite so daunting.

That’s what Auburn overcame by dominating the final day of the meet to win the Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships March 8-10 at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. It was Auburn’s second straight team title and fifth in the last decade.

The Tigers placed seven individuals in the top eight of their respective events on the final day of competition and finished with 535 total points. Arizona was second with 477 points, followed by California with 372 ½. Georgia, which has won four national championships since 1999, came in fifth overall.

Nineteen Auburn swimmers earned at least one all-America honor, surpassing the previous school record of 18 set in 2004 and 2006. The Tigers earned a total of 55 all-America honors, the third-best mark in a championships meet for the Auburn women.

“The girls surprised even me, and I don’t get surprised very often,” said co-head coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker. “The way we came out and just got better and better every session says something. This team has been through some challenges this year, and it has made them stronger as individuals and stronger as a unit. It certainly showed this weekend, and it’s by far the best this team has ever swum. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Auburn seniors Hayley Peirsol and Adrienne Binder helped put the Tigers back in front with standout performances in the 1,650-yard freestyle on Saturday afternoon. Peirsol defended her NCAA title with a time of 15 minutes, 49.92 seconds, while Binder earned second-place points with a time of 15:53.44. Chelsea Haser finished ninth while freshman Maggie Bird came in 15th.  Auburn tallied 48 total points in the event to claim the overall lead after Saturday’s first event.

Binder, who also anchored the school-record-setting 800-yard freestyle relay team, found it difficult to contain her excitement.

“It unbelievable,” she said. “I never knew I could be this emotional about it. I am so proud of this team and I couldn’t be happier right now. It’s been the most amazing experience and we’ve been through so much this year. It couldn’t have gone any better. It’s perfect.”

Auburn also excelled in the 100-yard freestyle, as Kara Denby and Emily Kukors finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The Tigers placed three swimmers in the top 10 in the 200-yard freestyle, with Kristen Hastrup, Ava Ohlgren and Tawnie Bethune coming in fifth, seventh and 10th respectively.

Georgia senior Kara Lynn Joyce won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles to finish her career with 18 NCAA titles, one behind the record set by Stanford’s Jenny Thompson. Joyce joins Natalie Coughlin of California as the only female swimmers to win two events for four consecutive years.

Stanford freshman Elaine Breeden made her first national championships meet a memorable one with a win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.02), a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (51.72) and a fifth-place mark in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.03). California sophomore Dana Vollmer won the 100-yard butterfly (50.69), while Southern California sophomore Rebecca Soni won the 200-yard breaststroke by more than two seconds (2:08.23).

Texas junior Jessica Livingston won the platform diving competition with 357.85 points. Livingston edged Indiana senior Lindsay Weigle, who finished with 356.55 points.

Auburn’s Tierney-Walker and co-head coach David Marsh were named coaches of the year after the meet.
