Arizona State pieced together the third-lowest point total in Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships history to win its first team title at the meet.

The Sun Devils’ Jacquelyn Johnson became the championships’ first two-time pentathlon champion during the March 9-10 meet at Arkansas, and senior teammate Amy Hastings contributed crucial points in distance events to Arizona’s 38-33 victory margin over LSU.

The winning tally is the lowest since 1985 and 1986, when Florida State won with 34 points, only to see Texas claim a title with only 31 points a year later.

Johnson and Hastings combined for 19 of the Sun Devils’ points, with Johnson posting a career-best point total in winning the pentathon, and Hastings managing a crucial sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run after finishing fourth the night before at 5,000 meters — an event she won last year.

This year, a dominating Sally Kipyego from Texas Tech claimed an unprecedented double win in those distance events, but Hastings’ three points in the 3,000-meter race still were enough to halt late charges by LSU and Tennessee.

“This championship has been so competitive and so tough,” said Arizona State coach Greg Kraft. “We really have had such a great team effort and a balanced program. We take a lot of pride in ourselves and that helped us get here today.”

Johnson was the only repeat individual winner at the championships, and she put together career performances to accomplish the feat.

“Going into the last event, I knew I had to win by 3.5 seconds and I PR’ed by four seconds,” she said.

The meet yielded two record performances, including a new mark in the weight throw by Southern Illinois’ Brittany Riley, who extended her world record in the event with a toss of 83 feet, 10¼ inches.

Also, South Carolina’s Natasha Hastings won the 400-meter run with a record time of 50.80 second, beating the three-year-old mark by Texas’ Sanya Richards by two-hundredths of a second.

Kipyego’s distance double — on the heels of a cross country individual title last fall — also created a stir in the Randal Tyson Track Center.

“I didn’t expect to win (the 3,000), but I came in thinking since I won one last night, if I get a chance I would go for it,” she said. “I wanted to see how my body was feeling so I stayed back. I saw that I had some, so I decided to go for it.”

Auburn’s Kerron Stewart also was a double titlist at the championships, sweeping the 60- and 200-meter dashes.
