The Division I Men’s Basketball Academic Enhancement Group has appointed five subcommittees to study specific issues related to improved academic performance in the sport.

The 30-member group met in person for the first time in August and began to explore factors that contribute to men’s basketball’s low APR standing and graduation rates. Members decided then that the subcommittee approach was the most efficient way to complete the group’s overall charge.

Five presidents have been named to chair the subcommittees. They are Greg Geoffroy of Iowa State University, Walt Harrison of the University of Hartford, Sidney Ribeau of Bowling Green State University, Gretchen Bataille of University of North Texas and Steve Weber of San Diego State University.

The panel also added one member, DePaul University Athletics Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto, who represents the Big East Conference now that panel member and former University of Pittsburgh Athletics Director Jeff Long became the AD at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Long will remain on the committee.

The working group will conduct a conference call in mid-November at which time each subcommittee will describe its progress. The full group will next meet in person January 15 in Nashville, Tennessee, and again April 8 in San Antonio after the Men’s Final Four.
