The NCAA News

The Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech toppled the UCLA Bruins, 4-2, to clinch the 2007 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships team title at the Henry Feild Stadium in Georgia May 22.

It was the school’s first NCAA title in any sport. (The football team has won four national championships via wire service polls.)

The Yellow Jackets fell behind early in the championship match after losing the doubles point, 8-3. However, freshman standout Amanda McDowell, who went undefeated in NCAA tournament play, tallied Georgia Tech’s first point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ashley Joelson at No. 4 singles. Kristi Miller also won a point for Georgia Tech when she defeated the Bruins’ Riza Zalameda, 6-3, 7-6 (3), at the No. 1 position.

One day after playing a key role in Georgia Tech’s semifinal victory against California, Christy Striplin rallied to beat Alex McGoodwin at No. 5 singles. After dropping the first set, Striplin won 12 of the final 14 games of the match to set up Alison Silverio’s championship-clinching three-set victory over Tracy Lin, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. Silverio, who also sealed the Jackets’ quarterfinal win against Fresno State, was named the most outstanding player of the tournament.

In addition to winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, UCLA also recorded a singles win from Yasmin Schnack, who beat Amanda Craddock.

Georgia Tech finished the season on a 21-match winning streak and a 29-4 record overall. UCLA was 21-8.

In the individual portion of the championships, Audra Cohen of Miami (Florida) earned the Hurricanes’ first NCAA women’s tennis singles championship in program history with a straight-sets win (7-5, 6-2) over Southern California’s Lindsey Nelson, who was making her second consecutive finals appearance.

Cohen broke a 5-5 tie in the first set and then cruised in the second.

Cohen also beat Nelson in the round of 16 of the team competition to catapult Miami into the quarterfinals. With the title, Cohen, who played for Northwestern for one season before transferring to Miami, became the first student-athlete to play for a women’s tennis singles championship at two schools. She finished the year with a 42-2 record.
Nelson, 31-8, also was the 2006 national runner up after falling to California’s Susie Babos.

In doubles, the North Carolina duo of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long earned the championship after upsetting the top-seeded tandem of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic of William and Mary, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

It was the first women’s tennis championship for the Tar Heels. In advancing to the title match, Anundsen and Long, both two-time all-Americans, joined Cinda Gurney as the only NCAA finalists in the program’s history.

“We got blown out in the first set and we weren’t sure what hit us,” said Long. “They are a great team, but we didn’t give up and we played much better in the second and third sets.”
