Duke uses patient approach to swing into third title

The simple approach suits the Duke women’s golf team.

The Blue Devils didn’t fall into the trap of thinking about capturing a third consecutive Division I Women’s Golf Championships team title. Instead, Coach Dan Brooks told his team to enjoy the season one swing at a time.

At the end of the tournament May 22-25 in Daytona Beach, Florida, that philosophy — and some key shots — helped Duke win its third straight crown by 15 shots over second-place Purdue.

Arkansas junior Stacy Lewis won the individual title by firing a 6-under-par 66 to post a four-day total of 282 on the par-72 LPGA International’s Legends Course.

Duke won the team title behind the play of Amanda Blumenherst, Anna Grzebien and Jennie Lee, who all posted top-seven individual scores. Blumenherst was fourth (289), Grzebien sixth (292) and Lee seventh (294).

“The neat thing about this team is we did not give (winning three straight NCAA titles) any air time at all,” Brooks said. “I think they love the game of golf, and golf is all about one shot at a time. So, if you just have people who love to play, you don’t get terribly hung up on what it means. What it means is you hit a great shot, and it feels good.”

The Blue Devils are only the second Division I women’s golf program to win three straight NCAA titles. They joined Arizona State, which accomplished the feat from 1993-1995.

Brooks, whose program has won five NCAA championships in the last nine years, was still more impressed with the personal growth he has seen in his student-athletes over the course of their careers.

“I love what I do, and I love the players I get to be associated with,” Brooks said. “You know from watching people like Anna (Grzebien) grow from being a touch on the immature side as she came in to being one of the best leaders we have ever had. She just leads this team.”

The Blue Devils began the final round with an eight-shot lead over Purdue, which posted its best finish at the NCAA finals.

Grzebien, a senior added, “We are all such close friends that just having each other’s support. We all know that we are all there for each other. We just tried to relax, enjoy ourselves and everyone seemed pretty calm.”

As for the individual competition, Lewis carded a 66 despite windy and rainy conditions. She entered the last round in third place, trailing Purdue’s Christel Boeljon by six shots.

“I was a little frustrated after nine holes because I had eight or nine easy birdie putts, and I only made two,” Lewis said. “Coach (Kelley Hester) told me to calm down. Then things started falling in place.”

Lewis made five consecutive birdies on the back nine.

“Stacy made it look easy,” Hester said. “She hit her approach shots close to the hole and made her putts. She’s a true champion.”

Boeljon, who shot a final-round 76, finished tied for second with Southern California’s Paola Moreno for a four-day total of 286.
